Yoane Wissa has overcome tough challenges to become Newcastle United's expensive new recruit. |
The DRC striker says he is still haunted by the horrific acid attack in 2021. "It was a very unpleasant experience," the Newcastle new boy said. In July 2021, just a month before joining Brentford from Lorient, Wissa faced a terrible incident.
He was attacked in his home, with acid thrown in his face, threatening his eyesight and his football career. The attacker, a woman, was later sentenced to 18 years in prison for the attack and the attempted kidnapping of Wissa’s daughter. Despite the physical and mental damage, Wissa quickly showed his determination to overcome adversity.
Lorient coach Christophe Pelissier, who visited Wissa in hospital the day after the attack, said: “Despite the severe impact, Yoane quickly showed his determination to succeed. His strong will and his refusal to give up were incredible.”
Wissa added: "This resilience has been a hallmark of my career, from playing in front of crowds of under 3,000 at Chambly in the French second division in 2019, to preparing to face Barcelona in the Champions League with Newcastle this season.
Last season, Wissa had 19 goals in the Premier League, the best achievement since joining Brentford from Lorient in 2021. Thanks to that, he was recruited by Newcastle United from Brentford for 55 million pounds.
