European football has another miracle

In the early morning of May 26, Royale Union SG defeated Gent 3-1 to win the Belgian national championship after 90 years.

In round 10 of the Jupiler Pro League championship racing teams, Royale Union SG had an impressive performance with 9 wins and 1 draw.

The 3 points won against Gent helped the home team Joseph Marien end their thirst for the national championship title that had lasted since 1935. The match at the Josef Marien Stadium started well for the home side when Franjo Ivanovic put Union ahead in the 10th minute. However, Gent's Andri Gudjohnsen equalised before half-time, putting the pressure on the Union players, especially as Club Brugge were level and could have gone ahead if Union slipped up.

But everything changed when coach Sebastien Pocognoli brought Promise David on in the second half. With his strong physique, skillful maneuvering and constant pressure on the Gent defence, David quickly made a difference. He scored in the 68th minute with a skillful finish into the corner of the net, before completing his double in the 75th minute, sending the fans into a frenzy.

Since returning to the top flight in 2021, Union have come close to winning the title on several occasions, but it was only this season, with impressive form and the timely arrival of stars like Promise David, that the dream became a reality.
