Vietnam Football: Positive signals from youth training

Over the past 10 years, Vietnamese Football has made significant progress. The Vietnam U23 team has participated in the U23 Asian Cup finals since 2016 and has continuously been crowned champion in the Southeast Asian arena. That result is a positive sign in the youth training work of Vietnamese Football.

From the feat in the Southeast Asian arena...

The Vietnam U23 team won against Indonesia on their home field in the final match of the Southeast Asian U23 Championship on the evening of July 29 to successfully defend the championship. This result helped the Vietnam U23 team once again affirm their leading position in the region.

This impressive achievement has received high praise from domestic and international football experts. The youth training work of Vietnamese football over the past time has created a team of quality, mature young players who have become more and more mature through each match and tournament. Names such as Cong Phuong, Dinh Bac, Anh Quan, Phi Hoang, Van Thuan... have made a strong impression on fans. In particular, the consecutive championship achievements of U23 Vietnam in the Southeast Asian arena show that Vietnamese football has played a leading role in the region in recent years.

Young Vietnamese players are increasingly mature and confident before major international tournaments.

In addition to developing in parallel and synchronously from youth to professional levels, Vietnamese football has also developed in parallel and synchronously. The U9, U11, U16, U17, U21 tournaments or professional football clubs (V-League), first division, national championship... are always ready to welcome and create the best conditions for Vietnamese players living and studying abroad who want to return to the country to contribute to the country's football. Or foreign players who want to choose Vietnam as a destination to contribute and develop their professional football career.

However, from any perspective, the reality shows that Vietnamese Football has been gradually balancing resources, creating favorable conditions for young players, and supporting overseas Vietnamese players to compete. This also helps Vietnamese Football avoid falling into a situation of lacking domestic resources when necessary.

Sharing with the press, Coach Dinh Hong Vinh (formerly acting head coach of the Vietnam U23 team) said: The current generation of U23 players has a lot of potential, good individual skills, and the ability to handle situations in a small area has improved significantly. Among them, the most prominent are goalkeeper Trung Kien, center back Hieu Minh, defender Phi Hoang, midfielders Van Truong, Van Khang, and striker Dinh Bac.

You have a modern way of thinking about football, confident in controlling the ball. In particular, the competitive spirit and tactical awareness are making positive progress. To maximize the potential of this generation of players, it is necessary to invest in a more synchronous and systematic way. Firstly, increase international exposure, especially in highly organized and intense matches, so that you can gradually improve your ability to compete in real combat. Secondly, focus on developing specialized physical strength and the ability to change state. This is what young Vietnamese players still lack when entering the continental arena. Finally, invest in tactical thinking and competitive psychology to help you understand your role and position and not be confused when you are behind or change tactics during the match.

Reality proves that U23 Vietnam at the present time has a group of players with a relatively good and even foundation. They have good physique, physical strength, and good football awareness. However, the players still need more time, more international competition, to help many individuals improve and become excellent and unique.

With a carefully and thoughtfully prepared group of players with good internal strength, we have complete confidence in the young players who can compete impressively and achieve the best results in the qualifying round and the final round of the 2026 U23 Asia.

...To the foundations of the future!

With the Football Development Project to 2030, with a vision to 2045 (Project) recently issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, for the first time, Vietnamese Football has officially institutionalized the central role of youth training, creating a comprehensive policy framework from selection, training, facilities to financial mechanisms, aiming to create a generation that can bring Vietnamese Football to the continental and world level.

Vietnamese youth football affirms its leading position in the region

According to the Project, the youth training system is organized with a “pyramid” model, the base level is the school-local-community football movement, the middle level is the academies and provincial training centers, and the top level is the National Training Centers. The connection between the levels is ensured by compulsory youth tournaments and a technical supervision system from the Vietnam Football Federation.

Specifically, from 2026, professional clubs will be required to maintain a full training system from U11 to U21. National youth tournaments will also be reformed, increasing the number of rounds, creating conditions for young players to compete more frequently - a key factor in developing skills, tactics and competitive spirit.

The new point is that the State will play a role in supporting the budget and facilities for localities and socialized organizations to participate in youth training. This is an important change, when Football always has the companionship and investment from the State budget and socialization.

In particular, in the coming time, according to the development orientation for Youth Football, the competition system will be improved, including age groups to ensure that young players play at least 20 to 30 matches/year. If this goal is realized, young players will certainly have many opportunities to compete and demonstrate their talents, thereby experts will have careful assessments and screening to select outstanding individuals to supplement the youth team and the Vietnam national team, contributing to creating great breakthroughs for Vietnamese Football in the continental and world arenas.

Regarding youth training, President of the Vietnam Football Federation Tran Quoc Tuan has repeatedly emphasized that if Vietnam wants to participate in the world arena, the national youth teams must regularly participate in the continental finals. They must even strive to compete for tickets to the U17 or U20 World Cup.

The above strategy of the Vietnam Football Federation is completely correct. But to realize the World Cup dream, Vietnamese football needs many generations of players to be focused on developing like the generation of Cong Phuong, Quang Hai, Van Hau...

The aspiration to reach the world of Vietnamese football has been clearly demonstrated in the past 10 years. The orientation to reach the continental and world level of Vietnamese football is correct. The fact that the young players are affirming their solid position in the regional arena will be a solid foundation for Vietnamese football to develop its internal strength with more focus and tightness in the coming time.
