"The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has appointed Carlo Ancelotti as the head coach of the national team. The Italian strategist officially began his work on May 26th, immediately after the end of the season with Real Madrid," The Athletic wrote.
At 65 years old, Ancelotti became the first foreign coach in history to lead the Brazilian men's national team. He will begin his tenure in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, aiming to lead the Selecao to their sixth World Cup title, an unprecedented achievement in the history of world football.
Despite having one year left on his contract with Real Madrid, Ancelotti reached an agreement to leave Santiago Bernabeu after successful negotiations between the parties. Diego Fernandes, representing the CBF, brokered the deal.
Ancelotti signed a contract that runs until the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. He will replace coach Dorival Junior, who was sacked in March after 14 months in charge. Ancelotti's debut match with Brazil is scheduled for June 6th, against Ecuador in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
Ancelotti returned to "Los Blancos" in 2021, helping the club win two more La Liga titles, as well as lifting the Champions League trophy three times over two stints. However, Real Madrid has declined this season. The club was eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal, lost to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, and is currently 7 points behind their arch-rivals in the La Liga race.
