New breakthroughs in heart failure treatment in An Giang

Heart failure is not just a disease in itself and is often accompanied by many comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and atrial fibrillation. These conditions worsen symptoms, increase hospitalization rates, and lead to mortality. New advances in heart failure treatment in An Giang open up a miraculous chance of survival for cardiovascular patients in An Giang and the Mekong Delta.

On May 13th, An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital successfully performed its 10th OFF-PUMP coronary artery bypass surgery (without using a cardiopulmonary bypass machine). This technique is performed on a beating heart, eliminating the need for a cardiopulmonary bypass machine and minimizing complications. Patient THH (57 years old), residing in Cho Vam commune, had a complex condition with multiple coronary artery branches and received timely treatment.

According to Dr. Cao Huu Loi, Deputy Head of the Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department (An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital), this method helps reduce complications, shorten recovery time, and is especially advantageous for high-risk patients. Doctors use specialized cardiac stabilizing devices to precisely suture the heart while it is still beating. A graft (from the internal thoracic artery or saphenous vein) is used to bypass the narrowed coronary artery segment.

With the support of Cho Ray Hospital, An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital has successfully performed surgery on hundreds of patients with congenital heart disease and valvular heart disease. Many patients who have undergone heart surgery here have expressed their joy at the hospital's remarkable progress. Implementing advanced techniques locally has helped cardiovascular patients in An Giang and the Mekong Delta region receive timely medical intervention at the closest possible distance, thereby saving both time and treatment costs.

During a follow-up visit to the Heart Failure Management Department (An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital), Ms. Bui Thi Tuyet Hoa, residing in Long Dien commune, stated that she had previously suffered from mitral valve stenosis and tricuspid valve regurgitation and had undergone surgery to replace her mitral valve and aortic valve mechanically, along with tricuspid valve repair. "Thanks to regular check-ups and monthly medication, my health is now completely stable," Ms. Hoa shared.

In order to seize the "golden hour" to save patients' lives, An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital has signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation with SIS International General Hospital in Can Tho. This important milestone not only enhances the capacity for receiving, providing emergency care, and intervening in stroke cases locally, but also opens up new hope for patients in the locality and surrounding areas to receive high-quality medical services without having to travel far.

Dr. Mai Pham Trung Hieu, Deputy Director in charge of operations at An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital, said: "The hospital has a stroke red alert procedure in place. In addition, we need to aim for building an optimal, synchronized treatment model, helping people in An Giang and surrounding areas access advanced techniques locally, making the most of the 'golden hour' in stroke emergency care."

The Interventional Cardiology Department (An Giang General Hospital) is asserting its position with many modern techniques routinely implemented, such as: complex coronary artery stenting, pacemaker implantation, automatic defibrillator implantation, and treatment of chronic varicose veins with endovascular laser (ELVA)...

The hospital's Intervention Department has been upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment, reaching the level of a leading-edge medical facility in Ho Chi Minh City, including advanced intravascular coronary imaging (IVUS-NIRS) and OCT technology, among the best in Vietnam. Dr. Nguyen Duy Tan, Director of An Giang General Hospital, affirmed: "This breakthrough allows people to access specialized treatment right in their local area, thereby minimizing the burden of referrals and optimizing costs."

The core objective in treating heart failure is to reduce mortality rates, limit hospitalizations, and alleviate symptoms for patients. To achieve this, the An Giang Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Association has proactively updated knowledge on the disease throughout the province. This began with a scientific workshop titled "Updating the Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Failure According to Current Recommendations: From Theory to Clinical Practice," held in Long Xuyen. The event brought together leading experts to share the latest protocols and clinical experiences, helping to improve the daily treatment capabilities of medical staff and thereby reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in the locality.

At An Giang General Hospital and Kien Giang General Hospital, the average rate of heart failure is approximately 50%, ranging from mild to severe. It manifests due to numerous causes, including valvular heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease; among these, coronary artery disease is the leading risk factor for heart failure.

An Giang province has many centers for preventing and treating heart failure, such as Chau Doc General Hospital, An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital, and An Giang General Hospital, which offer coronary intervention to reduce the risk of heart failure in patients with coronary artery disease. In particular, Kien Giang General Hospital is one of the leading regional hospitals in coronary intervention in the Mekong Delta and An Giang province. "To date, the number of heart failure cases has decreased compared to before because we are treating coronary artery diseases early," said Dr. Huynh Trung Cang, Head of the Cardiology Department at Kien Giang General Hospital and President of the An Giang Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Association.

The development of advanced treatment methods is opening up major breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, especially heart failure. “With innovation, professional development, and strategic cooperation among hospitals, the stroke emergency network in An Giang will be firmly strengthened, becoming a reliable medical support, fully protecting the heartbeat and life of patients and providing increasingly better healthcare for the people,” affirmed Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Quang Hien, Director of the An Giang Department of Health.
