Accordingly, the German Chancellor 's National Security Advisor, Günter Sautter, arrived in Paris, France, on May 27th to conduct the first round of negotiations. Representatives from several other European countries also participated in the event.
This move comes as, in March, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to establish a joint "nuclear steering group" to explore and develop detailed cooperation options.

In addition, Germany and France are also promoting closer cooperation on nuclear deterrence with Belgium, Denmark, Greece, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. On May 28, Norway also joined this group.
After the UK left the EU in 2020, France became the only country in the bloc to possess nuclear weapons. France currently has approximately 290 nuclear warheads out of a total of about 12,200 nuclear weapons globally, ranking fourth in the world after Russia, the United States, and China.
