According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, as of December 2024, the total number of ships and vessels registered in the Vietnam National Ship Register was 1,490.
Of these, the maritime fleet comprises 1,430 vessels, with the remainder being other types of vessels. The total deadweight tonnage (DWT) of the maritime fleet is approximately 11.367 million tons, and the total gross tonnage (GT) is approximately 6.8 million tons (of which 956 are transport vessels with a total DWT of approximately 10.5 million tons and a total GT of approximately 6.2 million tons).

This figure represents growth compared to the same period last year. Previously, at the end of 2023, the number of vessels registered in the Vietnam National Maritime Register was approximately 1,449, with a total tonnage of over 13.7 million tons and a total gross tonnage of over 7.2 million GT.
The average age of the current shipping fleet is 17.4. This includes 660 bulk and general cargo ships with an average age of 17.6; 43 container ships with an average age of 18.5; 164 oil and chemical tankers with an average age of 18.8; 21 liquefied gas carriers with an average age of 24.2; and 66 passenger ships with an average age of 9.5.
In recent times, many Vietnamese shipping companies have actively developed investment plans to expand their fleets with a diverse range of vessel types.
Typically, Vietnam Maritime Transport Corporation (Vosco) has planned to invest in approximately 10 vessels (both used and newly built) of various types, ranging from Supramax bulk carriers (56,000 – 58,000 DWT), Ultramax vessels (62,000 – 66,000 DWT), and MR product tankers (approximately 50,000 DWT)…
Specifically in the first quarter of 2025, Vosco expects to welcome approximately two more vessels to its fleet, enhancing its production and business efficiency. Prior to that, in 2024, the company invested in a new vessel after decades without any further investment.
Vinaship Shipping Joint Stock Company also recently announced plans to expand its fleet. Last year, Vinaship took delivery of the Vinaship Unity vessel in Singapore, with a deadweight tonnage of 28,189 DWT, built in 2012.
For Vietnam Maritime Corporation ( VIMC ), in addition to the plan to liquidate old ships with low operational efficiency and that do not meet IMO environmental requirements, VIMC is also developing a plan to invest in purchasing ships that are in line with its fleet development strategy, prioritizing new generation ships that are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Oil tanker shipping companies are also planning to expand their fleets to meet global shipping demands and trends. Specifically, in 2025, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Transport Corporation (PVTrans) plans to invest in approximately four vessels (1 MR-sized product tanker or 1 bulk carrier; 2 MR-sized product tankers or 1 Aframax crude oil tanker; 1 large LNG/VLGC tanker).
