Whales appear to hunt in Nha Trang Bay - Photo: Nha Trang Bay Management Board
On the morning of May 26th, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board announced that a whale had appeared in the strictly protected area of Hon Mun, within Nha Trang Bay.
According to observations, the whale surfaced several times to breathe in the clear blue waters of Nha Trang Bay. The whale moved slowly, surrounded by many birds, creating a lively scene.
This is the first whale to appear in Nha Trang Bay this year.
The Nha Trang Bay Management Board considers the reappearance of whales a positive sign for the marine ecosystem, indicating that food sources and ecosystem quality in the bay are improving.
To protect whales and ensure the safety of whale observation activities, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board requests that organizations, individuals, and vessels operating at sea avoid approaching too closely, maintaining a minimum distance of 100m from whales, and refrain from chasing, blocking, or separating mother whales from their calves if they are in pairs.
Tourist vessels are required to avoid gathering in large groups around whale-infested areas, reduce speed, minimize noise, and turn off their engines when stopped for observation.
Also, avoid using drones at low altitudes because the noise can interfere with the birds' navigation and communication.
According to the Nha Trang Bay Management Board, whales use low-frequency sound waves for underwater communication and navigation. The noise of boat engines, loudspeakers, or drones can disrupt their behavior, causing stress or altering their natural migration patterns.
The committee also urged residents and tourists to raise awareness of protecting marine wildlife and to immediately notify authorities when they spot whales or other rare marine creatures in the bay.
