The image of Vietnamese medical interns working alongside their French colleagues has long been familiar at Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital, on the outskirts of Nevers.
For many years, this leading hospital in the province of Nièvre has always welcomed doctors from the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, Quang Ninh province, for internship. An effective cooperation model in the medical field.
Resident doctor Truong Thi Hoai is visiting a patient with the head of the interventional cardiology department, Jacques Ballout, who is also her mentor in medical practice at Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital. She is one of two young Vietnamese doctors practicing at the hospital. While checking the patient's health, she listens attentively to her mentor's explanations of post-operative monitoring procedures.
Sharing with the Vietnam News Agency reporter in France, Dr. Truong Thi Hoai said she came to France as part of a joint training program between the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital and Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital.
During her first days in a foreign land, she was very worried because of confusion, cultural differences and language limitations. However, with the dedicated help of her colleagues at the hospital, these worries gradually disappeared and were replaced by confidence.
Dr. Hoai is working in the Cardiovascular Resuscitation Department, and is also studying cardiac intervention techniques. She hopes to take advantage of her internship at the hospital to further hone her professional skills, equip herself with knowledge and experience, and be successful when she returns to Vietnam. She also hopes that the hospital will have many training programs for young Vietnamese doctors who have just graduated so that they can study and acquire knowledge of French medicine.
Commenting on his Vietnamese colleagues, Head of Department Dr. Jacques Ballout said that up to now, the hospital has welcomed 5 interns from Uong Bi Hospital.
"Vietnamese doctors are very hard-working, enthusiastic, and learn very quickly. We are very satisfied with their work results," he commented, adding that accepting interns also helps the hospital reduce its workload. Because currently, hospitals across France and in the Nièvre province are seriously lacking medical staff.
He affirmed: "The fact that foreign interns, including Vietnamese, come to work also partly compensates for that shortage for us."
Agreeing with his colleague Jacques Ballout, Dr. Johnson Kwaku, Head of the Department of Neurology, said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for psychologists has also increased sharply, not only in France but also around the world . He expressed his desire to expand cooperation with Vietnam, creating conditions for doctors from this country to practice in France to improve their qualifications and skills so that when they return home, they can develop their expertise well.
Dr. Johnson Kwaku suggested: “We are having programs to call for and recruit foreign doctors. They will have to undergo examinations and do an internship at the hospital for a period of time. I think our Vietnamese colleagues might be interested in this opportunity."
Since establishing a cooperative relationship in the medical field in 2017, Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital and Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital have implemented many cooperation programs, not only in the field of exchanging interns, but also in professional exchange activities, charity medical examinations and support of advanced medical equipment, as well as transferring new techniques in surgery and treatment, especially in the field of cardiology.
Doctor Jacques Ballout, also Chairman of the Inter-Hospital Medical Council of the Nièvre Province, said that thanks to the connection of his colleague Nguyen Van Manh, a French doctor of Vietnamese origin, for nearly 6 years now, Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital has established a cooperative relationship with Vietnam, especially the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital.
Exchange and cooperation activities are mainly carried out in the field of cardiology. After a period of interruption due to COVID-19, from 2023, the two sides have restarted this cooperation program, focusing on regular online professional exchanges, organizing charity medical visits for French doctors to Uong Bi, not only to directly examine complicated cases, but also to provide on-site training for the hospital's team of doctors.
Dr. Nguyen Van Manh - Head of the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital, is the one who has contributed to the cooperation between the two French and Vietnamese medical facilities mentioned above. He confided: "As a son of Vietnam, I always want to help patients and my compatriots have the best medical care conditions. Since 2017, we have developed cooperation with Uong Bi Hospital, focusing on expertise in thoracic surgery and cardiovascular intervention. Within the framework of this cooperation program, Vietnamese doctors go to Nevers to study, and in return, Nevers experts return to Vietnam to help colleagues in Uong Bi develop cutting-edge techniques, perform charitable heart surgery, making patients and people satisfied."
He also added that this very effective cooperation program has also received the support of the Mayor of Nevers, who is also the President of the hospital. In the future, Pierre Bérégovoy Hospital will expand cooperation with other medical facilities in Hai Phong, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City./.
