In mid-July, temperatures in many localities in Nghe An ranged from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius. The prolonged harsh weather not only affected human health, but also seriously threatened agricultural production, especially vegetables, a type of plant sensitive to high temperatures and drought.
In Quynh Anh commune - a famous vegetable growing area of Quynh Luu district (old), many farmers have proactively responded by investing in sprinkler irrigation systems.
Here, green onions are one of the main crops of the coastal area at this time. On average, a green onion crop lasts about 45 days, with a yield of 1.5 tons/sao. Currently, green onions are sold at 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, bringing a stable income to the people.

Mr. Ho Dien Ai, in Hamlet 7, Quynh Anh Commune, is one of the pioneers in installing an automatic irrigation system. With 2 sao of green onions, he shared: “Before, watering by hand was very difficult. In this hot weather, if watering was not even, the plants would easily wilt and burn the leaves. Since installing the sprinkler irrigation system, the plants have grown much better, the soil retains moisture, the leaves stay green and especially save well water. On hot sunny days, I water 3-4 times in the early morning and afternoon, each time for about 10-15 minutes.”
The sprinkler irrigation system consists of a medium-capacity electric pump, a main water pipe and many sprinklers mounted evenly on the field surface. When operating, water is sprayed into small jets like rain, both cooling the air and wetting the ground evenly, creating ideal conditions for vegetables to grow in harsh weather.

According to local statistics, Quynh Anh commune currently has more than 700 hectares of land specializing in vegetable cultivation in the coastal plain. Notably, more than 90% of the vegetable area has been installed with sprinkler irrigation systems, showing a strong change in the application of technology in agricultural production.
Not only reducing labor, the sprinkler irrigation system also helps save a significant amount of irrigation water. Mr. Ho Dang Tam - Director of Quynh Bang Agricultural Cooperative (in Quynh Anh commune) said: "Compared to traditional flood irrigation, sprinkler irrigation helps save 30 - 40% of water. At the same time, plants are cooled evenly, limiting leaf burn and wilting due to hot weather. Although the initial investment cost is about 12 - 15 million VND/sao, the long-term effectiveness is obvious: reducing labor costs, increasing productivity, and improving vegetable quality."

Not only in Quynh Anh commune, many other vegetable-growing areas such as Dien Chau commune or forestry nursery communes in Tan Ky, Nghia Hanh... and many other localities have also applied the sprinkler irrigation model. Some households have also invested in automatic timer systems, allowing watering at night or early morning, the optimal time to reduce water loss due to evaporation.
The fact that farmers boldly apply sprinkler irrigation is a clear demonstration of modern agricultural production thinking, flexible adaptation to climate change. This is not only a temporary technical solution during the hot season, but also demonstrates the initiative and creativity of farmers in applying technical advances into practice.

According to the recommendations of the Department of Agriculture, to optimize the efficiency of the irrigation system, farmers should combine measures such as: covering the soil with straw or plastic to keep it moist, covering with nets to reduce direct sunlight on the plants, or rotating crops to avoid discoloration and reduce pressure on the soil. Synchronizing solutions will help vegetables overcome periods of extreme heat, maintain stable productivity and protect the quality of cultivated land in the long term.

In the context of Nghe An regularly suffering from extreme heat waves, sprinkler irrigation is considered an effective and sustainable solution for areas specializing in intensive vegetable cultivation. Not only does it help farmers save costs and increase production efficiency, the model also plays an important role in the strategy of transitioning to smart agriculture, adapting to climate change./.
