Need to choose more suitable plants for Yen Bai hills and forests

The failure of citrus fruit trees and the continuous decrease in the selling price of cinnamon peel and essential oil in recent times can draw a lesson: doing business is not a movement, production must be linked to the market, must comply with the law of supply and demand, the output will determine all production processes. Therefore, it is necessary to choose more suitable crops for Yen Bai hills and forests.

With the story of cinnamon, Yen Bai cinnamon products have the top quality in Vietnam, bringing high economic value, especially cinnamon grown in the communes of Vien Son, Dai Son, Mo Vang (Van Yen district), Kien Thanh, Hong Ca (Tran Yen), An Luong, Nam Muoi (Van Chan district). Thanks to cinnamon trees, many families have become rich.

In particular, all parts of the cinnamon tree (leaves, branches, bark, trunk, roots) are purchased and processed at high prices; because cinnamon trees bring high value, the growth rate of cinnamon acreage is also high. Previously, the story of "cinnamon crossing the river" only took place in Van Yen. After a while, cinnamon was grown in all communes in Tran Yen district. Then cinnamon was planted along Highway 70, the homeland went to Luc Yen rocky mountain, cinnamon went to Thac Ba lake island...

The whole province will have 81,000 hectares of cinnamon by the end of 2024, which is certainly not enough because cinnamon has been planted in many other areas. If you have the opportunity to visit provinces such as Lao Cai, Son La, Lang Son, Lai Chau, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An ... then you will see that, after the policy of restructuring the agricultural sector, the cinnamon area in the whole country is very large. Not to mention, many people buy cinnamon seeds from Tran Yen district to Laos to plant. With such a large cinnamon area and output, has supply exceeded demand? That is a big question, no state management agency has officially come to a conclusion but in reality, the answer is clear.

Mr. Bac Lan - owner of a cinnamon processing and exporting enterprise in Bac Ninh province said: "From Yen Bai cinnamon trees, I process more than 50 different products, of which, medicinal herbs and spices are the main ones. Medicinal herbs are not used much, spices only account for a small part in the food processing process. In the past, cinnamon was rare so it became valuable, synonymous with expensive, now there is a lot, too much reduces the price. That is a natural thing according to the law; not to mention too much, leading to surplus, especially when the market fluctuates".

Unlike the story of cinnamon, citrus fruit trees are also facing real difficulties in some outlying communes of Van Chan district, which is considered the capital of oranges and tangerines. In Hung Thinh commune, Tran Yen district, a "phenomenon" emerged thanks to citrus fruit trees, but now citrus trees are absent from the hills. What is happening to farmers? With citrus fruit trees, disease is the main cause. Citrus leaves turn yellow, roots rot and then gradually die. There are many opinions, from managers, scientists to orange growers... In the end, most of the orange gardens gradually die, and farmers suffer losses.

Citrus fruit trees such as oranges and tangerines, no matter how delicious and sweet they are, have limited consumption demand, not to mention oranges and tangerines are harvested in a short period of time, requiring high preservation costs. Cinnamon trees bring high value, but when the area is too large, it is also necessary to guide and propagate to count the area and output, prevent the situation of massive planting, dense planting to peel, gradually prune... leading to poor quality essential oils, pests, and the use of pesticides. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the construction and strong development of organic cinnamon areas, in parallel with attracting investment in the field of processing and trading cinnamon products. From reality, it is worth us to ponder and choose suitable crops.
