Appropriate legal framework is needed so that digital transformation does not affect safety and health in the workplace

(PLVN) - Today (April 28) is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. On this occasion, the Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Ms. Kaori Nakamura-Osaka, wrote an article mentioning the potential of the digital revolution to build safer and healthier workplaces.

Digital transformation is changing the world of work, and it is also having a major impact on occupational safety and health (OSH), according to Kaori Nakamura-Osaka. From artificial intelligence (AI), robots, wearable sensors to virtual reality, digital technology is revolutionizing the workplace.

These technologies have great potential to reduce occupational health and safety risks and improve working conditions. However, they also bring new risks, inequalities and gaps in regulation that need to be identified and responded to.

If not properly managed, these technologies can increase work intensity, reduce autonomy and increase levels of surveillance, leading to stress and poor mental health. While digital transformation has contributed to the rise of remote and platform working in the region, it has also blurred the lines between work and leisure time.

“To effectively respond to these complex changes, the Government , employers and employees need to work closely to ensure that digital transformation brings practical benefits, rather than undermining the safety and dignity of workers,” Ms. Kaori Nakamura-Osaka emphasized.

According to Ms. Kaori Nakamura-Osaka, OSH needs to be integrated into every digital transformation strategy - from AI, robotics to data management. OSH legislation needs to be updated regularly to address emerging risks. Comprehensive and continuous training is key - to ensure that all workers, not just in high-tech industries, can use digital tools safely. Special attention should be paid to vulnerable groups, including women, young people, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Ultimately, digital innovation should be seen as a tool to support, not replace, human oversight. Technologies such as smart sensors, predictive analytics, and automated decision-making systems are useful, but they need to be integrated into robust OSH frameworks that place people, oversight, ethical standards, and workers’ rights at the center.
