Balancing supply and demand, stabilizing the market for Lunar New Year 2025

Việt NamViệt Nam01/01/2025

There are only a few weeks left until the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025. This is the time when consumers start shopping, focusing on home decoration items, essential items, cakes, jams, etc. Along with stabilizing the prices of goods, functional sectors are synchronously implementing many solutions to prevent the trading of smuggled, counterfeit, poor quality goods, and goods that do not ensure food hygiene and safety.

Bustling market at the end of the year

In early January 2025, at some supermarkets in Tay Ninh city, the number of visitors and shoppers became more crowded, the atmosphere was more bustling than before. Due to the high demand of the people, supermarkets, department stores, distributors, and traditional markets have proactively imported and stocked essential goods such as: rice, cooking oil, instant noodles, poultry, seafood, cakes, candies, jams, beer, soft drinks, etc.

Many units have implemented attractive promotional programs, especially for high-demand products, to stimulate purchasing power, contributing to price stabilization and inflation control. In particular, the system of stores and supermarkets has maintained stable selling prices, while continuously supplementing goods and implementing promotional and discount programs to increase purchasing power.

Mr. Nguyen Van Bao - Director of Co.opmart Tay Ninh Supermarket said: " In order to proactively source supply and ensure stable prices to serve people's consumption needs in the 3 months before, during and after the Lunar New Year 2025, Saigon Co.op has proactively developed a plan and implemented stockpiling since mid-2024, with a total reserve output of more than 12,000 tons. Most of the budget is prioritized for 9 groups of market stabilization goods (including: rice, sugar, cooking oil, livestock meat, poultry meat, poultry eggs, processed foods, vegetables, fruits, seafood). The rest is for other food and non-food items and Tet specialties.

In addition to the program to stabilize the market of essential food, foodstuffs, and consumer goods for the 2025 Lunar New Year, Saigon Co.op is implementing a Tet promotion with the theme "Come to Co.op to bring Tet home" continuously for 59 days, from December 1, 2024 to January 28, 2025, with 3,500 Tet items heavily discounted to help consumers save money to welcome the new spring. Since the beginning of the third quarter, Co.opmart and Co.opXtra have proactively coordinated with manufacturers and suppliers to prepare 2-3 times more goods for sale in the system than usual, especially Tet goods such as cakes, jams, candies, ham, meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, banh chung, banh tet..."

Ms. Lam Ngoc Xuan (Duong Minh Chau district) said: “As Tet approaches, prices of many items tend to increase, however, at Co.opmart Tay Ninh supermarket, prices are always stable with many other promotional programs, so I often shop at the supermarket. I shop for Tet early to save time, avoiding the large number of customers having to wait in line to pay near Tet like last year.”

The Tet atmosphere in traditional markets is also gradually becoming more vibrant. Goods for sale in the markets are very rich and diverse, from food to consumer goods, notably clothes, Tet decorations, pickled onions, shallots, dried foods, fish sauce, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Hung Anh, a consumer, shared: “I have kept the habit of shopping at traditional markets for over 20 years. Today, I went to Long Hoa market to buy some essential household items. I found that this year the market is less crowded than usual. Although the market has many diverse, quality products at affordable prices, most of the younger generation is no longer interested in the market.”

It can be seen that the shopping trend for Tet in recent years is a shift from direct to online shopping. Online market activities on digital platforms such as TikTok, Zalo, Facebook are always bustling with many promotional programs, year-end discounts, price competition, creating a great attraction for consumers and increasing competitiveness for the traditional shopping market.

Strengthen control and stabilize market prices

To ensure food safety during the Lunar New Year and the 2025 Spring Festival season, the Provincial Interdisciplinary Steering Committee on Food Safety and Hygiene has implemented a plan to ensure food safety in food production, processing, trading, import and use.

Accordingly, strengthen control and promptly prevent the production and trading of fake and poor quality food, ensure consumer rights, prevent food poisoning during the Lunar New Year and the 2025 Spring Festival season; strengthen inspection from the provincial to commune/ward/town levels, focusing on product groups consumed a lot during the Tet and festival seasons with high risk factors, food processing craft villages, and districts with border gates.

Control and ensure food safety before, during and after the Lunar New Year and the 2025 Spring Festival season, especially products/product groups used a lot during the Lunar New Year and festivals such as: meat and meat products, beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, cakes, jams, candies, vegetables, tubers, fruits, food additives... and food service establishments.

Traders at Long Hoa market (Hoa Thanh town) start importing goods for Tet.

According to the Market Management Department, during the peak month, the unit will coordinate with functional agencies to organize monitoring, inspection, and control to promptly detect and prevent activities of transporting and trading in prohibited goods, smuggled goods; production and trading of counterfeit goods, poor quality goods, and goods violating food safety. In particular, attention will be paid to items that are often consumed during Tet such as: cigarettes, alcohol, beer, soft drinks, sugar, food, electronics, refrigeration, clothing, footwear, products processed from livestock, poultry, firecrackers, fireworks of all kinds.

In particular, promote the effective application of information technology and coordinate with agencies and units to combat and prevent trading in prohibited goods, smuggled goods, counterfeit goods, goods that infringe intellectual property rights, etc. in the online environment through e-commerce platforms, websites, and social networking sites.

During the inspection process, the Market Management force combined propaganda and dissemination of legal regulations on production and trade to organizations and individuals; mobilized business establishments to sign commitments not to trade in counterfeit goods, goods of unknown origin and goods that infringe intellectual property rights.

Consumer purchasing power is gradually "heating up".

In addition to the inspection and control of the market by the authorities, to avoid buying fake, counterfeit, and poor quality goods, people need to improve their consumer knowledge, choose to buy products with full labels, origin, and expiry date at reputable points of sale and businesses, to welcome a safe, healthy, and happy new year.
