People reported that at the end of 2024, when the seawall was broken, wastewater began to leak directly into the sea - Photo TL
Specifically, the area that people complained about is the sea embankment on Truong Phap Street (opposite Poseido Hotel) - where many hotels, restaurants, homestays are concentrated, about 700-800m from Nhat Le central beach. This is a place where tourists and people often come to swim. According to the reporter's observation, there is a stream of black, foul-smelling wastewater flowing into the sea. This discharge pollutes the environment of a section of the beach, causing disgust for tourists as well as surrounding businesses.
According to some residents, this situation has been going on for a long time but no one has taken action to deal with it. It is worth mentioning that on hot days, even though they are 40-50m away from the wastewater stream, they can still smell the stench. Many tourist groups who want to stop and take some souvenir photos at this location have to quickly walk to another place.
Mr. Tran Minh Chien, owner of BERMUDA homestay on Truong Phap street, Dong Hoi ward, indignantly said: “At the end of 2024, when the seawall broke, wastewater began to leak into the sea, black and smelly. Nearby businesses had to mobilize to cover the flow, but after a few days, “everything went back to normal”. In particular, in recent weeks, many tourists booked rooms but when they arrived, they saw the actual landscape and air pollution so they checked out and went elsewhere...”.
“I passed by this beach area and the stench was unbearable. Measures need to be taken to ensure a clean environment for both locals and tourists when they go to the beach,” said Ms. Hoang Thi Nga from Bo Trach commune when she went to Nhat Le beach with her family.
As a tourist from Hanoi who has been to Dong Hoi many times, Mr. Do Van Toan shared: "This time, we rented a hotel in this area and when we went to the beach, we saw the eroding embankment, the polluted wastewater smelled bad, so we didn't dare go swimming in the sea anymore...".
The wastewater flowing into the sea is dark brown and has a very foul smell - Photo TL
The wastewater flowing into the sea is dark brown. Where the wastewater stagnates, it gives off a very foul smell, and the surrounding land also changes color and smells.
Currently, the area above the location of the flow has a sewer that also smells terribly. The entire sewer area has been covered with plastic sheets by households to limit the spread of the stench and reinforced with stakes.
Through discussion, Mr. Tran Minh Chien said: “This pollution has been happening for several months now, causing difficulties for business, trading and accommodation activities of establishments here. Therefore, I hope that the authorities will consider to overcome the above situation to restore a clean and beautiful environment to Nhat Le beach”.
According to Ms. Doan Thi Hong Phuong, Deputy Director of Dong Hoi Public Service Management Board, currently, at Nhat Le 2 beach, the unit is assigned to manage and exploit the sandbank along the beach. The breakwater project at Nhat Le 2 beach is managed by another unit and is under construction but was severely damaged by the storm in 2020. The project is designed with storm drains. However, some business households
The service arbitrarily connected the domestic wastewater system to the project's rainwater system. Therefore, at the rainwater drain, wastewater and garbage were congested, giving off a foul odor and flowing directly to the beach, polluting the environment, aesthetics and directly affecting the quality of Nhat Le 2 beach.
“Recently, the number of visitors coming to relax, swim and enjoy seafood cuisine in this area has been very large. In order to ensure the aesthetics and service quality, the Dong Hoi Public Service Management Board has repeatedly reported and recommended relevant units to fix and repair as well as reported the current situation to the local authorities, but up to now, the above situation has not been resolved,” Ms. Doan Thi Hong Phuong added.
The above situation shows that investing in and upgrading the drainage system and treating wastewater pollution flowing into Nhat Le beach is extremely necessary. Therefore, local authorities and related departments and branches need to consider and have solutions; promptly collect and treat wastewater to ensure the living environment of people, tourist business locations as well as protect the marine environment.
