Canada announced on December 5 that it will ban 324 more types of guns, which Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said should only be used on the battlefield, not in the hands of hunters or sportsmen .

Ottawa is also working with the Ukrainian government and looking to donate these guns to support Kiev in its conflict with Russia.

The move follows a May 2020 ban on 1,500 gun models. In November 2024, that number grew to more than 2,000 as new variants were identified.

Public Safety Secretary Dominic LeBlanc announced the new restrictions on December 5, amid concerns from gun control activists that many assault weapons have yet to be banned.

“This means these guns will no longer be used,” said Mr. LeBlanc.

According to Defense Minister Bill Blair, Canada has approached the Ukrainian government and Kiev has expressed interest in these guns.

“Every support we can provide is a step closer to Ukraine winning,” Mr Blair stressed.

The Canadian government is working with provinces, territories and police forces to develop a plan to take back a wide range of prohibited firearms from their owners.

Canada has far fewer mass shootings than the United States, partly due to the difficulty in accessing guns. However, officials acknowledge that guns smuggled into Canada are often used by criminals.

However, opposition Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre called it a "trick" by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government, accusing the move of affecting "licensed, law-abiding hunters and sportsmen."
