Recently, patient NVC (56 years old, in Lang Son ) was transferred to the Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in a state of severe Dengue fever, with shock.

The patient developed a high fever with chills, headache, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. After visiting a local medical facility, the test confirmed positive for dengue fever. The patient was hospitalized for 4 days but the condition did not improve so he was transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

On the 5th day of illness, the patient developed purple spots on the skin of the abdomen, legs and arms, scattered bleeding in the lower legs, signs of infection, rapid breathing requiring oxygen support.

Test results showed that platelets were low, only 5G/L, white blood cells 3.7 G/L, bilateral pleural effusion and ascites. The patient was diagnosed with severe dengue fever with shock and received active treatment support from the beginning.

Another case is Mr. TVX (63 years old, in Hung Yen ). Five days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had a high fever of 38-39 degrees Celsius, severe headache, and body aches. Although he took fever-reducing medicine, the symptoms did not improve, accompanied by bleeding gums and black stools.

The patient was taken to a medical facility near his home and diagnosed with dengue fever. After 3 days of hospitalization, the condition did not improve and the patient was transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

At the Department of Viruses and Parasites, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, the patient had skin congestion all over the body, scattered small hemorrhages under the skin of the forearms and calves, platelets decreased, only 8 G/L, very high risk of bleeding. After 4 days of treatment, the patient's fever has stopped, headache has decreased, health is stable, platelets have gradually increased.

"Fortunately, the patient did not show any signs of blood concentration, was detected early, and treated promptly, so no unfortunate complications occurred," said Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Head of the Department of Viruses and Parasites.

Prevent mosquito bites after floods

After the heavy rains caused by storm No. 10, in Hanoi, there were more mosquitoes. A patient (34 years old, Hanoi) also contracted dengue fever since October 1 and had to be admitted to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases after 3 days of treatment, the disease did not improve.

The patient had mucosal congestion, headache, nausea, obesity, platelet count decreased to 21 G/L, pleural effusion and ascites. The patient had a poor prognosis, high risk of complications.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, upon admission, all patients are treated intensively and their health status is closely monitored every three hours. Currently, the hospital is treating 17 cases of dengue fever.

In recent days, storms and flooding have occurred in many localities in the North, increasing the risk of dengue fever outbreaks and many infectious diseases. Stagnant water in the environment is an ideal condition for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to breed, causing mosquito density to increase rapidly if not handled promptly.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh recommends that to prevent dengue fever, people need to kill mosquito larvae, clean up their living environment, cover water containers, sleep under mosquito nets, use mosquito repellent and spray chemicals regularly. At the same time, getting vaccinated against dengue fever is a safe and effective measure licensed by the Ministry of Health.

"People with chronic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney failure, immunodeficiency, etc.), obesity, people over 60 years old or pregnant women are at high risk and are susceptible to serious complications when infected with dengue fever," Dr. Binh emphasized.

Doctors recommend that when unusual symptoms such as high fever that does not subside, headache, nausea, nosebleeds, toothaches, subcutaneous bleeding or prolonged diarrhea appear, people should go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid dangerous complications.
