In recent times, the use of electric shock devices for fishing in U Minh Thuong commune, An Giang province, has significantly decreased. However, in some rivers, canals, and streams, cases of using electric shock devices for fishing still occur. In response to this situation, the U Minh Thuong commune police have intensified their efforts to raise awareness and encourage people to comply with the law, while also implementing various measures to detect, prevent, and strictly punish violations.
Earlier, on the river in Minh Tien A hamlet, U Minh Thuong commune, the commune police discovered Le Van Hau (born in 1994, residing in Group 2, Minh Tien hamlet, U Minh Thuong commune) using a motorboat and an electric shock device to catch aquatic products. The seized items included one motorboat, one 150Ah battery, one electric shock device, and one net. During questioning, Hau admitted to the violation and was fined 4 million VND.
In addition to handling violations, the U Minh Thuong Commune Police have intensified propaganda efforts targeting individual households, encouraging people to surrender electric fishing devices and sign commitments not to use them for fishing. They have also increased patrols and inspections to promptly detect and prevent violations. As a result, the U Minh Thuong Commune Police reported that by May 30, 2026, they had confiscated 5 electric fishing devices.

The commune police are urging residents to surrender electric fishing devices.
According to authorities, using electric shock to catch aquatic life is a destructive fishing method that seriously affects aquatic resources and natural ecosystems. Many aquatic species and organisms, including eggs and larvae, can be wiped out, reducing the ability of natural resources to regenerate and causing long-term impacts on the ecological environment.
The U Minh Thuong commune police advise residents to strictly comply with the law on protecting aquatic resources; not to produce, buy, sell, store, or use electric shock devices to catch aquatic products. At the same time, they encourage people to actively report violations to the authorities to contribute to protecting aquatic resources and the ecological environment in the area.
