Regularly surfing social networks, NTHT (born in 2000, Cuor Knia commune, Buon Don district) was attracted by livestreams on TikTok about numerology, "unlocking destiny" with the commitment to decode fame, career, love... based only on full name, date of birth on citizen identification card.
Curious, T. contacted an account named “Lucky Flower”. After providing basic information, T. heard the account owner talk about work, love... which “hit the nail on the head”; however, if T. wanted to know more about herself and predict the future, she had to see an in-depth prediction for 250,000 VND.
Without hesitation, T. quickly transferred money and was instructed to install the Vitus application to "open the numerology map". It turned out that the fee of 250,000 VND was only to open the personal map in 2025. If T. wanted to "decode his destiny" in the following years, he had to continue paying the fee...

After that, T. was invited by this account owner: "You are very lucky with the profession of numerology, you have the potential to become a sharer!". To help "sow fate", "Lucky Flower" suggested that T. join an online numerology course taught by her, with a tuition fee of 2.9 million VND.
T. said he was unemployed, dependent on his family, and had financial difficulties, but "Lucky Flower" encouraged him to study with a discount package and support for installment payments. Believing in the promise of a bright future and a chance to change his life, T. borrowed 1 million VND from a friend to pay tuition and attend online classes.
When entering the class, T. realized that most of the members of the class were people facing life pressures and financial constraints. The classes often discussed how to livestream, make videos to attract customers, and how to close orders for in-depth fortune-telling packages...
Not only those who are having difficulty finding jobs like T., many students also become victims of the online numerology trend. Like the case of LNBN (12th grade student) in Buon Ma Thuot City.
N. confided: "Since October 2024, I have had emotional problems and felt stuck, so I searched for answers online. Seeing an advertisement for numerology reading on TikTok for only 100,000 VND without having to meet in person, I have spent money many times to see "in-depth" readings for 100,000 - 300,000 VND/time. After spending more than 10 times, my relationship still did not improve."
"Many people have taken advantage of cyberspace to scam and entice people to transfer money and provide personal information under the guise of spirituality. If you are not alert, the consequences can be property appropriation, invasion of privacy or becoming a victim of high-tech crime" - Lieutenant Colonel , Head of Cyber Security and High-tech Crime Prevention Department (Provincial Police) . |
The stories of T. and N. have the same scenario: the subjects take advantage of the anxiety, curiosity, and lack of life experience of young people, people with difficulties in employment and finance; use social networks as a channel of access; make attractive offers with low initial costs or free to create trust, then sell more expensive service packages, training courses...
According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huy Nam, Head of the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department (Provincial Police), the creation of online study groups shows that this is a possible variant model, where those who have fallen into the trap are instructed on how to trap others, creating a loop of exploitation. To date, there is no scientific evidence to support numerology or fortune telling based on date of birth or name on identification.
Paying for fortune-telling services in the technology era is not only a waste of money but also carries many potential risks such as: receiving false, negative information causing confusion; being drawn into blind advice leading to wrong decisions in real life, creating opportunities for scammers to take advantage of trust for profit.
More dangerously, making friends with strangers online and providing personal information from your ID card can create conditions for bad guys to take advantage.
This information can be used to commit illegal acts such as impersonation, fraud or exploited by luring victims to install malicious applications. As a result, users can have their personal data exposed, or even have money in their bank accounts stolen.
Social network users need to be vigilant and proactive in providing information to authorities when they discover cases of superstitious practices such as fortune telling, fortune telling, and predicting the future, especially those that appear on social networks or through online applications, so that they can take action.
