Massive hot scenes
For two consecutive months, Vietnamese cinema screens have seen many hot scenes in Vietnamese films, such as The Last Wife , Live: Livestream, Occupy, The Sun Man... It can be said that the fact that Vietnamese films are more daring with hot scenes recently shows the openness and freedom of the censorship board, allowing filmmakers to freely create and express their artistic intentions after being "labeled" with the T18 rating - meaning that the film is only allowed to be distributed to viewers aged 18 and over.

However, up to now, the hot scenes mentioned above have not been very effective, creating many conflicting opinions among viewers. There are cases where the audience still finds the segments simple, superficial, and not fully exploited to express the emotional explosion when the female character has many intimate scenes with both the district magistrate and her lover like in the movie The Last Wife , even though the hot scene, according to director Victor Vu, "necessarily appeared to serve the story and the character's psychological development". There are hot scenes that make viewers feel unnecessary and feel that the filmmaker is abusing them because they are repeated many times like in the movie Appropriation by director Thang Vu.
Hai Phuong has no hot scenes but still has high revenue
Even, Occupy even had the opposite effect when in the first 30 minutes of the film, the director rushed to show a series of bold hot scenes revolving around the couple Son (played by Lanh Thanh) and Ha (played by Phuong Anh Dao) as well as Son and the maid Thao My (played by Miu Le). The looseness of the script as well as the lack of depth in character psychology made the hot scenes in Occupy not strong enough to highlight the director's idea and desire, which was "hoping that the hot scenes in the film, although bold, would be appropriate to the story and not cause discomfort to the audience".
The movie Live: Directed by Khuong Ngoc also has a scene showing the actors' skin that was considered "offensive" by the audience in the first story line of the movie about the battle between two girls who specialize in mukbang (filming eating scenes to broadcast online), Truc (Ngoc Phuoc) and Emi (Ngan 98). The character Emi, who only appeared in revealing clothes that revealed her curves, the movie gave this character a scene where she took off her shirt to show off her bare chest right on the big screen with many close-up angles on sensitive areas of her body. Even with the violent 18+ scene, it couldn't save the movie when Live: Direct only earned more than 2 billion VND.
How to use a "double-edged sword" in the right way?
Back to the hot scene in the movie The Sun Man mentioned at the beginning of the article. This movie belongs to the psychological, thriller, action genre, tinged with horror; revolving around two vampire brothers who have lived in seclusion for the past 400 years and their identities are accidentally exposed by a human girl, leading to other incidents in the movie. Therefore, the audience was very surprised when the director showed a violent hot scene in the bathroom of a vampire couple (Chi Pu and Thuan Nguyen's roles) in a bar, because most viewers thought that whether this scene existed or not, it would not affect the content of the movie. Besides, there are many opinions from people in the film industry saying "this extremely hot scene, although short, left a big mark, causing the entire film invested by Timothy Linh Bui to lose points because it looked vulgar and offensive, not interesting at all", so can this be considered a trick to attract viewers, attract debate to attract audiences for the movie?
Chi Pu and Thuan Nguyen have a bold hot scene in the movie Sun People
Producer Phuong Nguyen commented: "Everyone knows that the appearance of hot scenes in movies, no matter the reason, is a double-edged sword, because it is very difficult to control the fragile boundary of offensiveness. If the hot scene is not suitable for the story and the character's psychology, it will easily leave a difficult-to-swallow grain of sand and cause the movie to break emotionally." Sharing about the limits of hot scenes, a film critic (who requested anonymity) commented: "The hot scenes in the film Occupy show the director's inexperience, because they do not leave any flavor or emotion on the audience even though they are filmed in a suggestive style rather than showing off to create visual effects; and the bold, naked hot scenes in The Sun People also do not really help the film become more attractive. Many directors think that making many hot scenes is good, but it turns out to be a bad thing, counterproductive if they are not done properly or are not appropriate and reasonable. Don't let the audience be overwhelmed with hot scenes! It should be clearly understood that hot scenes are no longer a necessary element to attract a film, because the audience is more interested in the content, story, and new and attractive storytelling."
It can be seen that in the list of 5 Vietnamese films with the highest revenue in box office history, namely Mrs. Nu's House (475 billion VND), Godfather (425 billion VND), Flip Side 6 : Fateful Ticket (272 billion VND), Hai Phuong (200 billion VND), and Cua Lai Vo Bau (192 billion VND), none of them focuses on hot scenes. Therefore, directors should also think and consider more carefully to find a direction for storytelling, a more profound script to help the film have enough "flavor" and not just "color", while improving the technical quality of the film and the acting of the cast, avoiding getting carried away with unnecessary hot scenes!
