Expert: 4 signs in urine that reveal the kidneys are crying for help

Kidney disease often progresses silently, often detected when it is in an advanced stage, causing kidney failure or threatening life.

Early detection of kidney abnormalities is extremely important, and one of the simplest ways is to observe the color, smell and characteristics of urine.

There are several signs from your urine that indicate kidney problems. In some cases, it can even be a sign of kidney disease or kidney failure.

Urine is the product of the hard work of the kidneys. The kidneys filter all the blood in the body and remove excess fluid and waste that the body does not need. Urine is the liquid that holds that waste.

Here, expert Meredith Deeley, Communications Director at the American Kidney Fund (AKF), shares signs from urine that indicate kidney problems:

Foamy urine

If your urine is foamy or bubbly, it could be a sign of kidney problems. While normal urine sometimes foams (due to the high flow rate, but usually the foam dissipates quickly), if your urine is foamy or bubbly (persistently foamy after flushing), it could be a cause for concern. Consistently having foamy or bubbly urine could mean there is more protein in your urine than normal. This could be a sign of kidney failure or other kidney problems like IgA nephropathy or nephrotic syndrome, according to AKF.

Urine is dark yellow, brown, pink, or red

Normal urine is yellow or clear. If your urine is dark yellow, brown, pink or red, there may be blood in your urine – this can signal a kidney infection, urinary tract infection or kidney stones. More seriously, it can be a sign of chronic kidney disease, including rare conditions like IgA nephropathy.

Unusual-smelling urine can be a sign of a kidney infection.

Although urine doesn't smell pleasant, if it smells stronger or different, it could be a sign of a kidney infection, urinary tract infection, or kidney stones.

Unusual frequency of urination

On average, a healthy person urinates seven times in 24 hours. This can vary depending on a number of factors, including age, daily fluid intake, and medications. However, if the frequency of urination suddenly becomes unusual - more or less often than usual - could be a sign of a kidney problem.

Early detection and treatment of kidney disease can help slow or prevent kidney damage. If you experience these symptoms, see your doctor right away for kidney tests.

So remember to check your urine when you go to the bathroom, it can tell you something about your kidneys, according to AKF.
