Hemorrhoids on the rise in young people
"There is no research showing an increase in the rate of hemorrhoids in the community, but in reality, there is an increase in young people suffering from hemorrhoids, even patients as young as 10 years old. Previously, patients over 35 years old were often seen, but now there are many patients aged 15 and 16 years old," said Associate Professor, Doctor Le Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Anorectal Diseases.
The information was given by Mr. Cuong at the scientific conference on advances in the treatment of anorectal diseases combining modern medicine and traditional medicine held today, October 11, in Thanh Hoa.

Dr. Cuong noted that a sedentary lifestyle, eating little fiber (vegetables, fruits); eating a lot of fast food, drinking little water and overusing electronic devices are factors related to increasing the risk of hemorrhoids.
In practice, there are patients with hemorrhoids due to frequent constipation, even loss of bowel reflex, the initial cause of which is being too engrossed in playing games and often "holding back" from going to the toilet.
Or many people have the habit of watching iPads or phones while going to the toilet. This affects the "down there" reflex, hindering the reflex of pushing waste out through the anus, prolonging defecation time, which is a bad habit that increases the risk of hemorrhoids.
Do not abuse hemorrhoid surgery
Associate Professor Cuong said that normally, in the anal canal, hemorrhoids have the task of "closing" the anus. Hemorrhoids will collapse when waste passes through. However, when they lose function due to infection, when hemorrhoids prolapse outside, they need to be treated, but the first priority is internal medicine, preserving and shrinking hemorrhoids, not surgery.
Only when hemorrhoids are severe, cannot be treated medically, and cannot be surgically removed is hemorrhoidectomy indicated.
According to Dr. Cuong, there are currently many non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment methods, such as medication and sclerotherapy.
The choice of treatment method depends on the stage of the disease, associated diseases, the patient's condition, the equipment and facilities of the treatment facility and especially the experience of the doctor. Hemorrhoid treatment is combined with traditional medicine, helping to increase the effectiveness of treatment, reduce inflammation, and help shrink hemorrhoids.
"Diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhoids must be done by a specialist at the hospital. Absolutely do not treat hemorrhoids based on unofficial information on social networks. We have encountered cases of infection and necrosis due to improper treatment of hemorrhoids, even requiring the placement of an artificial anus," Dr. Cuong especially noted.
