The Capitol Police Department said on social media that the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on January 8, when officers working at a security scanner at the north gate of the Capitol's CVC complex discovered a machete in a man's pocket.
The security camera stopped while scanning the man's bag, then police arrested the man before confiscating the machete.
Police also found three knives in the bag, according to Fox News on January 9.
As a result, security screening at the CVC north gate was interrupted to allow the investigation to proceed.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.
The incident occurred hours before President-elect Donald Trump arrived at the Capitol to meet with Republican senators as he prepared to return to the Oval Office on January 20.
Senator Moore Capito, chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, chaired the meeting.

This also marks the first time Mr. Trump has returned to the Capitol since a mob of his supporters attacked the place on January 6, 2021.
On this occasion, Mr. Trump visited the funeral of the late President Jimmy Carter, which has been held at the Capitol since January 7.
Previously, in November 2024, Capitol Hill police arrested a man carrying a flare gun, a lighter, and several bottles of gasoline.
Also last year, police arrested a man who attempted to bring a hammer into the Capitol's CVC area.
