Ryan English, of Massachusetts, was armed with a folding knife and two Molotov cocktails when he approached a Capitol police officer on Monday and surrendered, according to a criminal complaint.
The complaint said English told the officer he was there to “kill Scott Bessent,” who had been confirmed by the Senate to be Treasury Secretary in President Donald Trump’s cabinet the day before.
According to the lawsuit, English initially planned to assassinate Trump’s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson. He switched his target to Bessent after learning of his confirmation hearing on January 27.
The petrol bombs in English's hands were filled with vodka and had a grey cloth soaked in hand sanitizer stuffed into the mouth of the bottle.
English was arrested for carrying an incendiary device onto Capitol grounds and could face other charges.
Billionaire Bessent, 62, has experience in investment fund management and is a veteran of Wall Street.
He has been a strong supporter of President Trump's tax cuts and tariffs, and has pushed for efforts to secure supply chains and the global position of the dollar.
