The three merged institutions have a long history of operation, but in recent years, the enrollment of all three schools has encountered many difficulties, combined with competition from universities and colleges across the country, causing the training scale to decrease, and facilities to not be fully exploited. In addition, the training professions are still overlapping and scattered, leading to not being able to maximize the potential.
Faced with that situation, the province determined that merging colleges is necessary to create new momentum for human resource training development. Accordingly, the project to merge three colleges in the area was approved by the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Council at the end of 2024, to concretize the Central Government's policy on rearranging the public education system. On that basis, in July 2025, the Provincial People's Committee completed the dossier to submit to the Ministry of Education and Training for consideration. On August 27, 2025, the Ministry issued Decision No. 2471 on the establishment of Lang Son College on the basis of merging three schools: Pedagogical College, Vocational College and Medical College.
Mr. Hoang Quoc Tuan, Director of the Department of Education and Training, said: The merger of three colleges in the area is an objective requirement from practice and in line with the Central Government's policy. When merging, resources are concentrated; facilities, teaching staff, and training majors have the conditions to complement and support each other, creating a combined strength. This is the basis for improving training quality, expanding professions and forming a multi-disciplinary, multi-field educational environment.
According to the decision, Lang Son College will receive all personnel, finance, facilities and students from the merged schools in their original state. This process is required to be implemented carefully, ensuring that all teaching and learning activities take place normally. Mr. Phung Quy Son, Principal of Lang Son Pedagogical College (before the merger) said: Since the merger policy was announced, the school has proactively coordinated with relevant units to carefully prepare the conditions. The top priority is to ensure that learning and teaching are not disrupted. Along with that, we review and prepare conditions to open new industries such as tourism, services, health care, mechatronics, agriculture and forestry, etc. These are areas that the province has advantages and society has high demand for.
Regarding the management structure, the school is under the Provincial People's Committee, unifying one focal point to replace the three previous separate units. On the new foundation, Lang Son College aims to become a high-quality college by 2030. The training scale is expected to increase from more than 2,000 students at present to 3,700 - 5,000 students by 2030, then stabilize at 5,000 - 6,000 students. In addition to traditional majors, the school will develop more industries, information technology, trade, logistics, to provide human resources to meet the province's economic restructuring, from agriculture to services, tourism, and processing industry. In particular, the province has oriented that after 2030, the school can be upgraded to Lang Son University, becoming a center for training high-quality human resources for the province and the region.
Student Dam Thu Huong, class 20, Early Childhood Education, Lang Son Pedagogical College (now Lang Son College) shared: “The merger not only created a stronger school, but also opened up many more opportunities. We were able to interact with students from medical, engineering, and tourism majors, and learn many new skills from each other.”
The establishment of Lang Son College aims to maximize resources, create a multidisciplinary, modern training facility, linked to the needs of socio-economic development. The convergence of strengths in human resources, programs and facilities promises to bring new momentum, improving the quality of vocational education in the province.
