On April 27th, Project Management Board 2 ( Ministry of Construction ) announced that the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway will officially open to traffic at 11:30 AM on April 29th. The opening of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway will provide a timely addition to the main road network, serving the increasing travel demand and reducing traffic congestion during the holiday season.
Accordingly, the operational and exploitation segment is from Km1050 to Km1138 - CT.01. The starting point connects with the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway at Km127 + 720, and the end point connects with the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon expressway at Km1138. The total length of the route put into operation is 88 km, of which the section through Quang Ngai is 60.3 km long.

The operational interchanges include the interchange at the beginning of the route (Km1051 + 494) in Nghia Giang commune, the interchange with Provincial Road 624B (Km1069 + 200) in Dinh Cuong commune, the interchange with National Highway 24 (Km1084 + 320) in Nguyen Nghiem commune, the Sa Huynh interchange (Km1099 + 820) in Khanh Cuong commune (all located in Quang Ngai province), and the Hoai Nhon interchange (Km1129 + 00) in Hoai Nhon ward (Gia Lai province).
Currently, the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway is not being tolled. There is a toll station at Km1050 + 600 on this section, but it is a temporary station serving as a closed toll collection point for the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway.
During the construction phase, contractors continued to complete the remaining items of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway. These included the completion of three eastern (left-hand side) traffic tunnels, the Duc Pho interchange (Km1092 + 640), the rest stop system; the intelligent transportation system, vehicle weight control, automatic toll collection, and additional service roads for local residents.

The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway project is the largest section among the 12 component projects of the North-South Expressway in the East, phase 2021-2025. The project has a total length of 88 km, passing through Quang Ngai province (60.3 km) and Gia Lai province (27.7 km), with a total investment of over 20,000 billion VND.
Construction began on January 1, 2023, with the Project Management Board 2 - Ministry of Construction as the investor and the Deo Ca Group consortium as the lead contractor. Considered one of the most technically complex sections of the expressway, the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway features 77 bridges, 586 culverts, and 81 pedestrian underpasses. Notably, the project includes three tunnels through mountains with a total length of over 4,500 meters.
Tunnel No. 1 is 610 m long, Tunnel No. 2 is 700 m long, and Tunnel No. 3 is a special-grade tunnel with a length of up to 3,200 m. When completed and put into operation, Tunnel No. 3 will become the longest road tunnel on the North-South Expressway and the third longest road tunnel in the country, after the Hai Van Tunnel and the Deo Ca Tunnel. The project was scheduled for technical opening on December 19, 2025, and the fire safety inspections for the tunnels along the route have been completed.

Previously, this expressway project was expected to officially open to traffic on February 12th to serve travel needs during the Lunar New Year holiday.
However, to ensure the safety of people and vehicles, as well as to ensure consistency when connecting with other expressways, on February 12, 2026, Project Management Board 2 temporarily suspended the planned opening to traffic as initially scheduled.
