Efforts to combat IUU fishing in Thanh Hoa province are being intensified, contributing to the nationwide effort to lift the EC's "yellow card".

Over the past period, relevant sectors and units have implemented many measures to address existing problems, working together with the whole country to lift the European Commission's (EC) "yellow card" in fisheries exploitation.

Despite numerous efforts, as of March 12th in Thanh Hoa province, there are still some fishing vessels with "three no's" (no registration, no inspection certificate, and no fishing license), vessels with expired inspection certificates, and issues related to vessels with disconnected GPS tracking devices.

The Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing in Thanh Hoa Province discusses implementing urgent measures to combat IUU fishing.

According to the Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing in Thanh Hoa province, the reason is that the locality has a large number of fishing vessels, a vast sea area, many estuaries and coastal areas, so border guards, fishing port management boards, and local authorities have not been able to control 100% of fishing vessels operating in the area...

Strict control and timely handling of violations.

The Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing in Thanh Hoa province has requested relevant departments, agencies, and localities to strengthen propaganda and education to raise awareness among fishermen about combating IUU fishing.

The Thanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-Department is requested to compile a list of fishing vessels at risk of violating regulations and send it to 27 coastal provinces and cities for monitoring and timely detection and handling of violations.

The Thanh Hoa Provincial Border Guard Command organized a concentrated patrol and control campaign, resolutely preventing fishing vessels from operating at sea if they lack the necessary procedures and documents, do not have license plates, or do not possess the required equipment.

The requirement is that fishing vessels 15 meters or longer are not allowed to unload seafood at fishing ports, unauthorized fish loading points, or fishing wharves that are not designated fishing ports.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Cao Van Cuong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province and Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Steering Committee against IUU fishing in Thanh Hoa province, said that the EC inspection team is expected to conduct its 5th inspection in June to consider lifting the "yellow card" warning against Vietnamese seafood; and Thanh Hoa province is one of the key localities for this inspection.

Therefore, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing has requested relevant departments, localities, and units to disseminate information to ship owners and households with fishing vessels about the regulations on combating IUU fishing.
