Nepal's Ministry of Tourism said it has issued 454 permits to climbers from 61 countries to conquer the 8,848.86-meter-high Mount Everest.
According to Mr. Bigyan Koirala, an official of the Nepal Tourism Ministry, this is the largest number of permits ever granted by Nepal to mountain climbers to conquer Everest.
Among the athletes licensed to climb the mountain, 96 are from China, 87 from the US and 40 from India.
Many fear that Everest will be overcrowded again, as it has been in the past. In 2021, the Nepal Tourism Board issued a record 409 climbing permits. That number dropped to around 325 in 2022 due to the conflict in Ukraine, which has prevented climbers from Russia, Ukraine, Poland and several European countries from taking part in the conquest.

According to organizers, China's new regulation requiring its citizens to climb an 8,000-meter peak before conquering Everest has caused many climbers from this country to flock to Nepal to fulfill their dream.
China lifted a three-year ban on travel to Nepal on March 15, but Beijing has not allowed international climbers to resume Everest tours for the fourth year in a row.
Avalanche risk is also a concern this climbing season, as snow continues to fall in some areas after a dry winter. Avalanches can occur at any time, especially when new snow falls on top of compacted snow. The newer snow becomes unstable, causing an avalanche.
A climbing permit for Everest costs $11,000 for foreigners and 75,000 rupees for Nepalese. Climbers pay between $50,000 and $90,000 to climb Everest. An experienced guide can earn up to $12,000 during the 45-day climbing season each year.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first climber reaching the summit of Mount Everest. The climbing season will begin in the second week of May.
