Since 2017, Pha Mu commune has actively implemented the conversion of crop structure, focusing on encouraging people to grow cinnamon on ineffective forest and upland areas. Thanks to the consensus and response of the people, the cinnamon area has been increasingly expanded, becoming the main livelihood of many households. A typical example is the family of Ms. Ha Thi Thien in Huoi Bac village. Determined to change her livelihood, Ms. Thien invested in planting 3 hectares of cinnamon. Up to now, 2 hectares have entered the harvest stage.

The family of Ms. Ha Thi Thien in Huoi Bac village (Pha Mu commune) harvests cinnamon bark.

Ms. Thien shared: Cinnamon trees are not only easy to grow, adapt well to local climate conditions, but also bring high economic value thanks to a stable consumption market. Currently, the price of fresh cinnamon bark ranges from 17 - 20 thousand VND/kg, dry bark from 38 - 40 thousand VND/kg, dry branches about 15 - 20 thousand VND/kg. On average, each hectare of cinnamon can bring in nearly 50 million VND in revenue, many times higher than growing corn and cassava.

Like Ms. Thien’s family, Mr. Khang A Cu (Pa Khoang village) is also a pioneer in converting ineffective upland land to cinnamon cultivation. Thanks to cinnamon, his family not only has a stable source of income but also reduces the cost of care and agricultural materials compared to other short-term crops. From an unstable income, Mr. Cu’s family now has savings, can invest more in their children’s education and gradually improve their quality of life.

Mr. Vang A Su - Vice Chairman of Pha Mu Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune currently has 200 hectares of cinnamon, of which 60 hectares are in the harvesting stage. To ensure stable output, the commune proactively connects with Quy Tieu Agricultural Cooperative in the area to consume products. Coordinate with specialized agencies to organize technical training courses, instruct people on the process of planting, caring for and harvesting cinnamon properly, ensuring product quality, increasing productivity and economic efficiency.

The effectiveness of cinnamon trees has significantly contributed to helping Pha Mu commune achieve positive results in socio-economic development. By the end of 2024, the commune had completed 19/19 new rural criteria and achieved 17/19 advanced new rural criteria; average income per capita reached 55 million VND/year; the multidimensional poverty rate decreased to 5.85%. Forest coverage reached nearly 41%.

The success of developing cinnamon trees in Pha Mu commune is not only a testament to the effectiveness of shifting the crop structure to suit natural conditions and local characteristics, but also clearly demonstrates the innovation in production thinking of the people. In the coming time, Pha Mu commune will continue to expand the area as well as strengthen the connection between people, cooperatives, and enterprises in the value chain of production, processing and consumption of products. Thereby, contributing to increasing the economic value and building the Pha Mu cinnamon brand in the market.
