Celine Dion makes a surprise comeback

The singer won for Switzerland in 1988 with the song Ne partez pas sans moi . She competed against singers from 20 other countries in Dublin, Ireland. Under Eurovision rules, contestants do not have to be citizens of the country they represent.

Her message was played on a giant video screen behind the stage: "Dear Eurovision family and contestants.

I would love nothing more than to be in Basel with you right now. Switzerland will always have a special place in my heart.

It was a country that believed in me and gave me the chance to be part of something extraordinary. Winning Eurovision 1988 for Switzerland was a life-changing moment for me, and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me."

The 57-year-old singer added: "It's amazing and emotional to see Switzerland win and host this event again. To the people of Switzerland, thank you for your love. This night is yours, and I hope you feel as proud as I do."
