Nvidia is expecting the Vera CPU line to become a new growth driver, as artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly demand more processing power.
Speaking at the company's earnings call on May 21, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said Vera could open up an entirely new market worth $200 billion for the company. This statement came after Nvidia recorded a record quarter with revenue of $81.6 billion and projected revenue of $91 billion in the next quarter.
Vera is a line of CPUs introduced by Nvidia in March. CPUs, or central processing units, typically handle computational and coordination tasks in a computer system. Meanwhile, GPUs, or graphics processors, have long been Nvidia's strength and play a crucial role in training and running AI models.
According to Huang, Vera is designed specifically for "agentic AI," meaning AI agents capable of performing tasks in place of humans. He argues that the "thinking" part of the AI model relies primarily on the GPU, while the AI agents themselves will depend more on the CPU when performing tasks.
Nvidia's CEO stated that Vera is designed to process tokens as quickly as possible. Tokens can be understood as small units of data that AI models use to analyze and create content. This approach differs from traditional CPU architectures in cloud computing, which focus on the number of processing cores to run multiple applications simultaneously.
Although Nvidia leads in the GPU market, the CPU market has long been dominated by companies like Intel and AMD. Furthermore, major cloud computing providers are also developing their own AI chips, creating significant competitive pressure. Amazon Web Services recently highlighted a major agreement with Meta for its own developed AI chip.
However, Huang stated that Nvidia has sold $20 billion worth of standalone Vera CPUs this year. According to him, the world currently has about 1 billion users, but in the future there could be billions of AI agents, and these agents will all need tools to function just like humans use personal computers today.
