“The mission continues,” Mr. Altman, best known for launching the artificial intelligence (AI) app ChatGPT last year, wrote on the social network X.

Mr Nadella also wrote on X that Mr Altman “will join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research group”, alongside OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and their colleagues.
Mr. Altman was abruptly fired by the OpenAI board on November 17, prompting several other senior figures to leave the company, including Mr. Brockman. The Wall Street Journal reported on November 19 that major OpenAI investors such as Microsoft and Thrive Capital were trying to restore Mr. Altman as CEO.
However, OpenAI's board of directors stood by its decision in a memo to employees on the evening of November 19, asserting that it was "the only path to advance and protect OpenAI's mission," according to The New York Times .

“Simply put, Mr. Sam’s conduct and lack of transparency in his interactions with the board undermined the board’s ability to effectively oversee the company in the manner the board is required to do,” the OpenAI board explained in the letter.
Also according to the above document, OpenAI's board of directors appointed Mr. Emmett Shear, former CEO of Amazon's streaming service Twitch, as interim CEO.
