Mudguards are often considered a minor accessory attached to car tires, but in reality, they are an important part that helps protect the car from environmental damage.
The Construction Newspaper hotline received a question from a reader wondering if a torn fender on one side of their car, while the vehicle is due for inspection, will cause it to fail the inspection.
Mudguards are a mandatory inspection item in the vehicle registration process; however, torn or broken mudguards will not affect the vehicle's registration results (illustrative image).
Regarding this issue, a representative from a vehicle inspection facility in Hanoi stated that mudguards (also known as wheel fenders) are parts attached to the rear tires of a car.
According to the National Technical Regulation on Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Semi-Trailers, Four-Wheeled Motor Vehicles for Cargo and Passenger Vehicles for Technical Safety and Environmental Protection Inspection (QCVN 122:2024), checking vehicle mudguards is one of the mandatory items in the inspection of motor vehicles for road use.
Specifically, if the mudguards are not fully installed (missing one side or both sides), this is classified as a significant defect (MaD) and the vehicle will fail this inspection item, resulting in the vehicle not being issued an inspection sticker and registration certificate.
However, in cases where the mudguards are installed improperly, torn, or broken, as in the question from a reader of Construction Newspaper, the car will still pass the mudguard inspection because this is considered a minor defect (MiD).
If all remaining inspection items are passed, the car will be issued an inspection sticker and a registration certificate with an inspection cycle appropriate to the vehicle's manufacturing date and model.
A representative from the vehicle inspection center added that although torn or broken mudguards do not affect the vehicle inspection results, car owners should still promptly repair or replace them to ensure the mudguards function most effectively, protecting the wheels in particular and the car in general.
Mudguards have many uses, helping to protect car wheels and reduce the impact of the vehicle on other road users during rain and muddy conditions.
An auto repair garage technician also stated that nowadays, many new car models are equipped with mudguards as standard equipment; many car manufacturers also prioritize installing quality products on their vehicles.
Most car mudguards are made from high-quality plastic or rubber, making them durable, able to withstand strong impacts, and easily remove dirt and debris from the wheels.
This helps reduce mud and dirt splashing onto the car body and rear, preventing unsightly and unattractive appearances. It also reduces water splashing towards the rear and sides of the car, affecting other vehicles and pedestrians on the road.
In addition, mudguards help protect the wheel arches, reducing oxidation over time due to exposure to wind, rain, sand, and dust, saving car owners the hassle of cleaning them every time.
Currently, there are many types and styles of mudguards on the market, so many car owners also use mudguards as a way to decorate their "beloved car," making the car look more robust and powerful.
