Although his body is not perfect, Ngo Van Vinh still tries triathlon as a way to challenge himself.
Ngo Van Vinh (Thuy Huong, Chuong My, Hanoi) is a special boy. When he was born, his hands were not as healthy as everyone else's with his lower forearms not fully developed, each hand only had 3 fingers. Despite this disadvantage, Van Vinh has a passion for triathlon (3 events combining cycling, running and swimming). This is an interesting sport because of the nature of continuous racing over many different distances, requiring extremely good physical strength and a strong will.
Sharing with reporters, Vinh said he decided to participate in IronMan 70.3 held in Da Nang this time because he "loves sports so much, wants to train his health, perseverance and challenge himself".
"I was quite lucky to have been trained to swim since I was young, but I mainly swam by instinct, without any technique. Recently, when I decided to participate in the triathlon, I learned and had seniors share their knowledge and experience so that I could complete the swimming part well. With cycling, I have only participated in 6 training sessions in order of increasing distances from 10km to 80km, the longest time was on the day of the competition when I cycled 90km. As for running, I have been approaching it for many years," the young man shared.
Ngo Van Vinh inspires many young people to participate in triathlon
With quite an impressive achievement, Vinh was very satisfied when completing IronMan 70.3 this time even though Da Nang was "as hot as a frying pan".
For Vinh, sports bring him good health, perseverance and discipline. When tired of work, Vinh turns to sports to relieve pressure effectively. Not having a perfect body, the Hanoi boy still trains his best with triathlon. Besides, he also participates in mountain climbing to train his physical strength to supplement the remaining sports.
"On the day of the race, I was about to go ashore but was swept away by the waves. It was very difficult to set foot on the sand. Cycling for 90km also left me almost exhausted because my arms were numb, I was tired of holding the wheel, and the sun in Da Nang was very hot. After about 10-15km, I had to stop to recover my arms. When it came to the running part, the sun was even harsher, it was very hot outside, but I still finished after nearly 7 hours," Vinh said about his experience competing at the recent IronMan 70.3.
Triathlon is a "tough" sport because of its harsh and long nature, making many people still hesitant to participate.
"Triathlon will help you overcome all your limits. But don't forget to have a serious training plan, with a roadmap, and learn from the experiences of your seniors. Little by little each day, you will conquer triathlon as well as yourself, opening up your own limits," Vinh affirmed.
