Race to restore telecommunications network in flooded area of Phu Yen

Heavy rains and floods caused a series of telecommunications stations in the old Phu Yen (now part of Dak Lak) to lose connection. After a period of repair, one network operator has completed the repair, and two are about to complete it.

On November 26, Mr. Bui Thanh Toan - Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Dak Lak province - said that telecommunications enterprises have mobilized maximum human resources and equipment to restore information to people in the flooded area of Phu Yen (now the east of Dak Lak province).

According to the Dak Lak Department of Science and Technology, at the peak of the flood, Viettel lost signal at 100/350 stations (29%), VNPT lost 246/460 stations (53%) and MobiFone lost 240/415 stations (58%).

By 4:00 p.m. on November 25, Viettel had completely restored mobile signal; VNPT still had 10/460 stations without signal (2%); MobiFone still had 35/415 stations without signal (8%).

Hundreds of BTS stations are still running on generators due to widespread grid outages. The estimated damage to all three networks is nearly 240 billion VND.

Despite the complicated weather, the technical staff of the network operators still stayed at the scene, divided into mobile teams, carrying generators, fiber optic cables, and spare materials to approach the bottlenecks.

According to Mr. Toan, MobiFone stations that depend on the VNPT fiber optic cable line have not been restored yet and therefore cannot operate again. At locations such as Hoa Thinh, Hoa Dong, Tay Hoa and Dong Hoa, strong water and landslides have prevented technical staff from accessing them.

The Department requested network operators to urgently ensure information in Hoa Xuan commune, where people are expected to be evacuated when storm No. 15 arrives, and will coordinate a field inspection in Vung Ro on November 26.
