CCTV recently cited a report from the Guangzhou Certification and Testing Group, showing that 21 out of 23 types of disposable facial wipes commonly sold on e-commerce platforms such as Taobao and Pinduoduo were found to contain carbon disulfide residue exceeding the allowable level, directly affecting the health of consumers.

Dangerous wordplay

The reality of toxic chemicals in products is covered up by manufacturers with dangerous wordplay. Specifically, many types of towels made from chemical fibers are labeled as soft, skin-friendly with natural plant fiber ingredients, regenerated cellulose fibers.

These phrases, combined with the packaging printed with white cotton patterns, have led consumers to mistakenly believe that "soft" towels are equivalent to pure "soft cotton" towels, even though the two products have completely different properties and production processes.

"Soft cotton" towels are made from 100% natural cotton, without the need for any added chemical binders, resulting in a breathable, absorbent, skin-friendly, non-irritating and odorless finished product.

In contrast, "soft" towels are mainly made from chemical fibers such as viscose, polyester... Although the surface feels soft, the production process of these fibers poses many risks to the health of users.

When extracting fibers from natural materials such as wood and bamboo, large amounts of toxic chemicals such as sulfuric acid and carbon disulfide are used.

If the cleaning process during production is not thorough, residual toxic solvents will stick to the towels, turning them into toxic everyday items.

This is the reason why users smell a burning smell similar to that of a burning towel when it comes into contact with warm water. It is the smell of residual chemicals released when exposed to heat.

Effects on skin and nervous system

According to Sina Finance , chemicals in poor quality towels can easily irritate sensitive skin, leading to redness, itching, and stinging.

Even with healthy skin, long-term use of towels containing excessive chemicals will cause irreversible damage to the skin's protective barrier, reducing the ability to lock in moisture, making the skin dry and rough. Weakened defenses also make the skin susceptible to bacteria and cause skin inflammation.

More seriously, chemicals such as carbon disulfide can be absorbed by the skin and enter the blood circulation, adversely affecting the nervous system, leading to unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

CCTV recommends that consumers choose products from large, regulated factories and read the fiber content on the packaging. Only products clearly labeled "100% cotton" are natural facial wipes with no detectable carbon disulfide residue. Don't pay a high price for "fake nature" with your own health.
