Chelsea to release 14 players

After winning the right to return to the Champions League, Chelsea plans to carry out a major reform of its force.

According to The Guardian, the Stamford Bridge team is ready to say goodbye to up to 14 first-team players in this summer transfer window to renew the squad according to the philosophy of new coach Enzo Maresca.

The list of names put on the market includes both expensive players and potential stars. Most notable is the case of Joao Felix, a £45m contract from Atletico Madrid. After an impressive loan spell in 2023, Felix officially joined Chelsea but failed to live up to expectations and was pushed to AC Milan for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Noni Madueke, who has enjoyed a remarkable season with 11 goals and a first England cap, could also be sold. Although highly rated, the former PSV man's development is said to have stalled and he no longer fits the new plan.

Joao Felix faces an uncertain future.

In addition, goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic can both leave if they receive a reasonable offer. Defenders such as Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga and Trevoh Chalobah are also on the list of players to be sold.

In midfield, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, a former student of Maresca's at Leicester, along with Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu could be available for transfer after a lacklustre season.

Notably, Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling, who were once highly anticipated, are also listed for sale if there is a partner willing to pay.

In the opposite direction, Chelsea opened negotiations with Borussia Dortmund about recruiting Jamie Gittens, a young star of the England U21 team, while closely monitoring the situation of Mike Maignan, the star goalkeeper for AC Milan. Maignan is considered a suitable option to replace the unstable Sanchez.

Previously, Chelsea also released Sancho because this player demanded too high a salary. The former Dortmund star's income is nearly 300,000 pounds per week, while the pillars of the Stamford Bridge team such as Enzo Fernandez or Cole Palmer only receive 180,000 and 130,000 pounds per week respectively.

Under the leadership of Enzo Maresca, "The Blues" are demonstrating great ambition in building a youthful team, in line with the long-term strategy. However, this major personnel surgery also poses a big challenge for the leadership in balancing finances and maintaining stability in the dressing room.
