According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Tha, Director of Kinh Mon Forest Beekeeping Cooperative, this year, due to unfavorable weather, lychee, longan and many other An Phu forest flowers bloomed less, so the honey output of cooperative members was affected.
Currently, only about 40% of the households raising wild honey bees in Kinh Mon can harvest spring honey, the remaining households can only harvest enough honey to feed the bees. However, the output of these households is only 50 - 60% compared to last year.
The spring honey crop starts from late January to mid-April. Every 7-9 days, a batch is harvested. On average, during the spring season, beekeepers harvest about 8 batches, each hive produces nearly 2 liters of honey per harvest.
To maintain the bee colonies and prepare for the summer-autumn honey harvest, households in the Kinh Mon Forest Beekeeping Cooperative have contacted owners of longan and lychee gardens in Thanh Ha, Chi Linh and Hoanh Bo districts, Quang Ninh province to move the bee colonies to these gardens. They have cleaned and disinfected the hives so that the bees can be brought back after the end of the spring honey harvest.
Kinh Mon Forest Beekeeping Cooperative was established in September 2019 with 27 members. Up to now, the cooperative has 40 members who are forest beekeeping households in Kinh Mon town and some households in Kim Thanh and Thanh Ha districts. The annual honey output of households is about 18,000 liters, bringing economic efficiency of over 3.4 billion VND. Small-scale households earn 40-50 million VND per year, large-scale households earn more than 100 million VND. Kinh Mon forest honey products have been built by cooperative members to meet 3-star OCOP standards.
