Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, Katia Aveiro, supports the view that Lionel Messi won the 2023 Ballon d'Or due to favoritism.
The account @ lucascr7olendario recently posted on social network X a photo of Cristiano Ronaldo with the individual awards he has won, including five Ballon d'Ors, three UEFA Best Player awards and four European Golden Shoes. This person wrote: "Earned, not given".
The post was met with a response from Aveiro. Ronaldo's sister commented with five clapping emojis below, a nod of approval, but possibly a reference to the five Ballon d'Ors Ronaldo won in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Aveiro, 46, has repeatedly defended Ronaldo and denigrated those who have made things difficult for her brother. In December 2022, after witnessing Argentina win the championship while Portugal were eliminated in the quarterfinals, Aveiro commented that the 2022 World Cup was the worst in history. Previously, she criticized Real President Florentino Perez when he said Ronaldo was too old to return to Real and "put down" Luka Modric because he thought the midfielder stole his brother's UEFA Best Player award.
Messi and Ronaldo shared five Ballons d'Or between 2008 and 2017. But Messi has since gone on to win three more, while Ronaldo has failed to add to his tally. The 2023 win means the Argentine superstar has taken his tally to eight, after 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021, and has widened the gap with Ronaldo, who is right behind him.
The Ballon d'Or is voted for by France Football magazine (France). The right to vote belongs to 100 journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings. Each journalist chooses five players from a list of 30 candidates. The player with the highest combined score from the 100 votes will win. According to the results announced on the evening of October 30, Messi leads right above Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri.
After receiving the award, Messi said that he and Ronaldo both liked to compete and push each other to work harder during the peak years of their careers. The 36-year-old striker said that the competition between the two sides left beautiful and memorable memories for football lovers. He also predicted that this would be the last time he won the Ballon d'Or.
