LCĐT - Ms. Po Thi Lien's family in Nhan Giong village, Muong Khuong town (Muong Khuong) used to mainly grow corn and rice, and their economy was not very prosperous. In 2012, seeing that people in other villages were growing tangerines with high economic efficiency, she discussed with her husband to convert part of the family's corn growing area to growing tangerines.

Ms. Po Thi Lien (right photo) shares her experience of growing tangerines with villagers. |
In the early years, due to lack of experience, Ms. Lien's family's tangerine garden produced small, ugly-looking fruits, with dry segments, so it could not be sold. Not accepting failure, she sought out agricultural extension officers and gardeners in the district to ask for experience and learn more about planting and caring for tangerine trees in books, newspapers and the internet. Applying the knowledge and experience she learned to her family's tangerine garden, just one year later, the tree bore sweet fruit.
Understanding the growth characteristics and mastering the care techniques, Ms. Lien expanded the planting area to a commercial scale. Showing me the hill in the distance, Ms. Lien said: From the initial 500 tangerine trees, my family now has 2,800 trees. The tangerine area has developed steadily, yielding an average of 8-10 tons of fruit/year, bringing in an income of more than 100 million VND.
Growing tangerines for more than 10 years, Ms. Lien has learned from experience: In addition to diligence and hard work, it is impossible not to apply science and technology to growing and caring for tangerines. Although tangerines are considered easy to grow and do not require much care, if fertilizing and spraying pesticides are not done properly, the fruit set rate will be low, the fruit will be bland or sour, and the tree will even rot at the base and wither. About 1 month after harvest, it is necessary to prune the branches and create a canopy to create ventilation for the trees to grow together...
Mr. Trang Van Thanh, Secretary of the Nhan Giong Village Party Cell, said: Ms. Po Thi Lien is a typical farmer in economic development in the locality. Not only is she good at economic development, Ms. Lien is also an exemplary head of the Village Women's Association, a pioneer in movements, and willing to share economic development experiences with members. Ms. Lien has encouraged many families in the village to convert ineffective corn and rice fields to tangerine cultivation, thanks to which the people's lives are increasingly stable.
