However, a new survey from CDK Global shows the opposite, with most electric vehicle owners seeing lower operating costs, despite the longer turnaround times.
The EV Ownership Study, conducted between December 2024 and January 2025 among thousands of consumers in the United States, found that 53% of non-Tesla electric vehicle owners rated maintenance costs significantly lower than gasoline vehicles. For Tesla owners, the figure was 41%.

Despite the lower costs, nearly 85% of EV owners still had to take their vehicles in for repair or maintenance within the first year. Of those, only 13% paid for service, while 16% went to the dealer because of a recall. This reflects the overall nature of the EV market: low costs but still requiring a ready after-sales system.
A growing trend is mobile maintenance and home pickup and delivery services. In 2024, 19% of EV owners opted for mobile repair, up from 14% the year before. At the same time, 9% of users used home pickup services (up from 6%). Conversely, the percentage of owners who brought their vehicles to the workshop themselves fell to 83%.

Despite the increasing variety of service options, repair times are slowing. The percentage of vehicles repaired the same day has dropped sharply from 40% (2023) to 28% (2024). Meanwhile, the number of vehicles repaired the next day has increased from 21% to 29%.
Part of the reason for the long repair times is the difference between Tesla’s service model and traditional manufacturers. Tesla operates its own service shop system, servicing only its own vehicles. Traditional dealers, on the other hand, have to handle both gasoline and electric vehicles at the same time, which takes longer to train technicians, prepare tools, and process after-sales services.

As the EV market expands, especially with the entry of more companies besides Tesla, the after-sales system, from technical capabilities to service experience, will play a key role in retaining users. Low cost is an advantage, but if the processing time and after-sales satisfaction are not guaranteed, the transition to EVs can be hindered.
