Sharing international experiences in art development in the context of globalization and digital transformation

On October 14, in Hanoi, an international conference with the theme "Arts development in the context of globalization and digital transformation: International experience and lessons for Vietnam" was held by the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in coordination with the People's Committee of Cua Nam Ward (Hanoi).

Developing art in the context of digital transformation

The workshop was held within the framework of the National Science Project "Art Development in Vietnam to 2030, vision to 2045", aiming to create a forum for exchanging international experiences and suggesting directions for art development in Vietnam in the coming time.

In his opening speech, Chairman of the People's Committee of Cua Nam Ward Nguyen Quoc Hoan said: At the 2021 National Cultural Conference, in the speech of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, it was clearly stated: "Building a digital cultural environment suitable for the digital economy , digital society and digital citizens, making culture adaptable, regulating the sustainable development of the country in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Urgently develop cultural industries, build a healthy cultural market."

In the context of strong globalization and digital transformation, creating a strategic development orientation for literature and art is not only a task of preserving and promoting national identity but also a way to deeply integrate Vietnamese culture and people, contributing to the sustainable development of the country. In Cua Nam ward, as well as in Hanoi city, culture and art are always identified as the core foundation, contributing to enhancing the position of the Capital - "Creative City" in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Therefore, the International Conference with the theme "Developing art in the context of globalization and digital transformation: International experience and lessons for Vietnam" is not only an academic event, but also an important milestone, opening up opportunities for us to together shape the future of Vietnamese art in the new era.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Cua Nam Ward Nguyen Quoc Hoan delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

"We expect the Workshop to become an open dialogue forum where creative ideas are inspired, valuable experiences are shared and practical policies are proposed. The contributions at the Workshop will be the foundation for state management agencies, especially the Hanoi People's Committee, to continue to perfect mechanisms and policies, promoting the development of art forms, worthy of the stature of the thousand-year-old capital," said Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hoan.

In her keynote speech at the workshop, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, said: Art is a broad field, always strongly affected by economic, political and social changes at home and abroad. In recent decades, art development in Vietnam has achieved many positive results: the ecosystem of activities is increasingly rich; the quality of creation is improved; creative participants are diverse; opportunities for the public to access and enjoy art are expanded; the art market has initially formed and developed.

In the context of rapid globalization and digital transformation, the art sector is facing both opportunities and challenges. Current art development requires both inheriting traditional values ​​and absorbing contemporary trends, taking advantage of technological power and international integration. At the same time, Vietnam is implementing the Cultural Development Strategy to 2030, so research and exchange of international experiences on art development are increasingly practical. This is an urgent requirement that needs to be systematically researched and analyzed, with the participation of experts, researchers, artists and managers at home and abroad.

Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong delivered a keynote speech at the conference.

The conference received attention and enthusiastic response from the academic and art community at home and abroad. With 03 valuable international presentations by scholars from Japan, Korea, France and 36 presentations by Vietnamese experts, the presentations focused on key contents such as: identifying and clarifying trends and factors affecting the development of art in the context of globalization and digital transformation; comparing international contexts and experiences with the context, models and practical requirements of Vietnam; identifying lessons learned from international frameworks and experiences of other countries that can be applied in Vietnam; proposing solutions and initiatives to promote the development of Vietnamese art in the coming time. Thereby, the conference brought multidimensional perspectives and breakthrough solutions.

International exchange is a "key" factor for artistic development.

Sharing at the Workshop, from the perspective of an expert on Gagaku - Japan, the oldest music and dance form in the world, Prof. Noriaki Mita Gagaku - Director of the Mita Gagaku Research Association said: "In 2010, at the request of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts VICAS (now the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism - VICAST), I joined a research team of Japanese ethnomusicologists and religious scholars to visit Cham villages in Vietnam. Although in terms of musicology, there are no ancient elements left that can be related to Rinyū-gaku in Japanese Gagaku. However, my observation is different. I found that some dance movements performed by the Cham people are very similar to those preserved in Rinyū-gaku Bugaku in Japan - a dance originating from ancient Champa."

According to Professor Noriaki Mita Gagaku, the similarities between Vietnamese Cham dance and Japanese Rinyū-gaku Bugaku show a deep historical connection, opening up opportunities for Vietnamese artists and scholars to research, compare and develop classical dance traditions. Maintaining, teaching and introducing Gagaku to the international public, tourists, as well as cross-border cooperation is the way to preserve living art, while creating a foundation for new creations based on classical values.

"I believe that, through combining research, education and performance, both Japan and Vietnam can together maintain and promote this intangible cultural heritage, and at the same time inspire future generations of artists, so that Gagaku and traditional performing arts not only survive but also thrive in the context of globalization" - Professor Noriaki Mita Gagaku said.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Jimin Jeon - Director of Poem Music, Korea emphasized that cultural exchange is a key factor to preserve and develop traditional music in particular and art in general.

According to Ms. Jimin Jeon, the Koviet Sinawi project, implemented by Poem Music since 2024, is a creative collaboration between Korea and Vietnam, aiming to combine Vietnamese Don Ca Tai Tu and Korean Sinawi to create a modern orchestral work, while establishing a sustainable international cooperation model.

The core of the project is the art of improvisation – a characteristic element in traditional music of both Korea and Vietnam. This is not only a performance technique but also a form of creative thinking, demonstrating the artist's ability to react immediately, flexibly and individually in the musical space. Thereby, when combining these two traditions, the project has placed improvisation in the position of cultural language. Korean and Vietnamese artists together find similarities in the system of melody, sound and rhythm, thereby creating new harmonies – where traditional musical materials are transformed into contemporary creations. It is the improvisation element that helps the product not be confined but always open up the possibility of renewal, responding to the spirit of the times within the framework of preserving cultural identity.

Conference scene

From international experience, Prof. Dr. Tu Thi Loan (Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism) said that to promote the development of the arts in the context of digital transformation, it is necessary to have consistent policies on investment in technology infrastructure, development of creative human resources, copyright protection in the digital environment as well as mechanisms to support innovation and cultural startups. In particular, promoting online platforms, developing museums - theaters - digital art spaces and linking with digital content technology is a direction in line with current trends.

For Vietnam, the most important lesson is to consider artistic transformation as an organic part of the national cultural digital transformation, linked to the Cultural Industries Development Strategy and the National Digital Transformation Program. Institutional improvement, infrastructure investment, digital creative human resource training, along with policies to support startups and international cooperation will be prerequisites to help Vietnam build a modern, open, integrated and unique art scene in the digital age./.
