This is a particularly meaningful moment for the 74-year-old strategist, just a few months after he officially announced that he had completely defeated prostate cancer.
Van Gaal was diagnosed with the disease in late 2020, but kept the information secret until April 2022. During his third stint as coach of the Netherlands, he had to undergo about 25 radiotherapy sessions, many hormone injections, surgery, catheters and urinary drainage bags.
At the 2022 World Cup, despite his declining health, Van Gaal still directly led the “Orange Storm” on the field. At that time, he admitted that the ability to go to the toilet by himself again would be a “miracle”. After two years of fighting, this coach’s health has improved significantly.
Last July, Van Gaal confirmed: “I am no longer fighting cancer. Two years ago, things were bad, but then everything was fine. I still go for regular check-ups and I feel healthier and healthier.”

Van Gaal and Truss married in 2008, after his first wife – Fernanda Obbes – died of liver and pancreatic cancer in 1994. He has two daughters, Brenda and Renate.
During his coaching career, Van Gaal has led many big clubs such as Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AZ Alkmaar and the Dutch national team. During his short time at MU (2014-2016), he helped the "Red Devils" win the FA Cup championship in the 2015/16 season.
After retiring in 2022 to focus on treatment, Van Gaal is still praised by experts as one of the best coaches in modern football, with a winning rate of nearly 61% after 930 official matches.
