On the afternoon of October 16, the first households in Xin Man commune (Tuyen Quang province) received multi-purpose cash support. The support helps people proactively pay for essential needs such as food, medicine, clothes, home repairs and necessary household items, depending on the conditions of each household. Before the distribution, Plan International Vietnam and commune officials organized propaganda and instructed people on how to effectively use the support, while providing information and basic knowledge on protecting children in natural disaster risks, and instructions on personal hygiene and reproductive health for girls.

It is expected that this month, 970 support packages including cash, daily necessities, blankets and hygiene products will reach affected households. In Tuyen Quang province, the communes of Xin Man, Nam Dan, Hoang Su Phi, Lao Chai and the wards of Ha Giang 1 and Ha Giang 2 are the areas that have suffered heavy consequences due to landslides and prolonged heavy rains. Among them, Lao Chai Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities is one of the schools that suffered the most serious damage.

According to local reports, on the night of September 29, the school promptly evacuated all students from the area at risk of landslides. However, after only a few hours of heavy rain, a serious landslide occurred in the boarding students' accommodation area, causing some rooms, toilets and the entire embankment wall about 35 meters long to collapse under the rocks and soil, causing an estimated loss of more than 3 billion VND. Currently, 507 boarding students of the school have to temporarily stay in the old hall of the Commune People's Committee while waiting for the restoration of the facilities.

Within the framework of the emergency relief package, Plan International Vietnam is implementing multi-purpose cash support activities for people in Xin Man, Nam Dan, Hoang Su Phi communes, Ha Giang 1 ward and Lao Chai commune; providing non-food packages including blankets and feminine hygiene products to 200 households in Ha Giang 1 and Ha Giang 2 wards; and supporting students to return to school by distributing living supplies to boarding students at Lao Chai Primary and Secondary Boarding School and Phuong Do Primary School.

In the coming time, Plan International Vietnam plans to continue providing materials to repair the roof of the dining hall of Lao Chai Primary and Secondary Boarding School, aiming to ensure the safety of boarding students and support them to return to school after natural disasters.

Representative of Plan International Vietnam, Ms. Le Quynh Lan, Country Director said: “Plan International Vietnam would like to send our deepest condolences to the children and people of Tuyen Quang province - who are suffering severe consequences from the recent floods. With nearly 20 years of operation in the locality, Plan International Vietnam is committed to continuing to accompany children, families, schools and local authorities not only in the emergency phase but also in the process of recovery and sustainable development after natural disasters to ensure that all children live safely, healthily and have full learning opportunities.”

This support package is part of Plan International Vietnam's efforts to join hands with the Government and partners in protecting children, especially girls, from the impacts of natural disasters and climate change; contributing to building safer, more resilient communities that are better able to adapt to future risks.
