Mount - the screw tightening Man United's loose machine

Ruben Amorim may not say it, but everyone can see: Mason Mount is the player he needs most in the "cleaning" and rebuilding of Manchester United.

Amorim is helping Mount revive.

Mason Mount, a detail-oriented professional who understands tactics, listens and accepts his role, is showing why both Erik ten Hag and Amorim see him as the most important part of the unfinished puzzle at Old Trafford – the part called “balance”.

Mount arrived at Manchester United with the expectation of becoming a new type of maestro: dynamic, intelligent and willing to sacrifice. But under Ten Hag, he has shown little more than… patience in the recovery room.

Just seven Premier League games in 15 months – a number that is enough to make any confidence falter. But Amorim – who takes over at the end of 2024 – sees Mount differently. He sees not numbers, but attitude.

Mount’s quiet gym workouts at Carrington, while his teammates were on holiday or in training, were the start of what Amorim calls a “professional standard”. In the dressing room, he weeded out “bad energy” sources like Rashford and Garnacho, and held Mount up as an example to the rest. He attended tactical meetings despite being injured, stayed on the training ground longer than everyone else, and took ice baths and saunas to regain his fitness – something only truly hungry players do.

Mount is different now.

From Tuchel to Amorim, Mount has always been a “system” player – someone who understands how to press, how to occupy space, how to be the link between Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro when the club has to deal with a midfield three. In the win over Sunderland, he not only scored the opener but also showed why he was picked to replace Matheus Cunha – a seemingly bold decision. Cunha is the striker, Mbeumo is the striker, but Mount brings the balance the club has been lacking for a long time.

Amorim said bluntly: “He is a real midfielder. He is intelligent, defends well, attacks effectively.” The words are simple, but behind them is a deep trust. Mount helps Amorim do what Ten Hag never did: make Manchester United press in an orderly way, control the game with intelligence rather than reaction.

And that’s something the team has lacked for years – initiative. Amorim has repeatedly admitted that Manchester United “are not good at reacting when they’re behind”, because they start slowly and lose their rhythm. Mount, with his energy and experience of playing in a similar system at Chelsea, could be the man to change that. “I want to bring energy, trigger the pressing and help the team around me,” he said.

Against Liverpool this weekend, Mount’s role is even bigger. More than just a mobile attacking midfielder, he is the “fuse” that allows Amorim to resume the pressing rhythm – a vital weapon in big games. Injury has limited Mount’s playing time, but the way Amorim manages him – giving him an hour on the pitch, then withdrawing him as planned – shows he understands the value of this player: few but good.

Mount brings strong energy to MU.

Interestingly, those qualities were also something Ten Hag believed in but never got to witness. He may have been right – Mount was the missing piece. But it was only with Amorim’s arrival that the belief had a chance to take shape.

At 26, Mount is still not at his peak, but he is on the right track: back to his true “engine” self – persistent, precise, humble. He needs to shine not with cannon shots, but with the team’s breathing. If Manchester United under Amorim truly find their balance, don’t be surprised if the man keeping the rhythm in midfield is Mason Mount – the seemingly lost piece now at the heart of a rebirth.
