Early this morning, October 17, Hanoi experienced a relatively thicker layer of fog than usual, with visibility greatly reduced between midnight and early morning.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the main reason is that the cold air mass at the beginning of this year's season tends to appear earlier than average, starting from mid-October and gradually increasing in intensity from November.

The average temperature in the North and North Central regions at this time is forecast to be approximately 0.5 - 1 degree Celsius lower than the same period in many years. Weak cold air combined with high humidity from the Gulf of Tonkin, plus temperature inversion and windlessness, have created conditions for fog to form and maintain for many hours this morning.

Meteorological experts say that the fog season in Hanoi usually lasts from October to March of the following year, peaking in December to February when the weather is cold and humidity is high. Fine dust and air pollution during this period also make the fog thicker, causing a heavy feeling and making it difficult to dissipate even when there is light sunshine.
