Early this morning, October 17th, Hanoi experienced a relatively thick layer of fog compared to normal, significantly reducing visibility during the night and early morning hours.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, the main reason is that the first cold air mass of the season this year tends to appear earlier than average, starting to become active from mid-October and gradually increasing in intensity from November.

The average temperature in the Northern and North Central regions at this time is forecast to be approximately 0.5-1 degree Celsius lower than the same period in previous years. A weak cold front combined with high humidity from the Gulf of Tonkin, plus temperature inversion and calm winds, created conditions for fog to form and persist for several hours this morning.

According to meteorological experts, the foggy season in Hanoi typically lasts from October to March of the following year, peaking in December to February when the weather is cold and humid. Fine dust and air pollution during this period also make the fog thicker, creating a heavy, oppressive feeling that is difficult to dissipate even with mild sunshine.
