The New Zealand Government and Parliament prioritize strengthening relations with Vietnam.

(laichau.gov.vn) On the afternoon of August 28, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament Gerry Brownlee on the occasion of the Speaker's official visit to Vietnam.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was pleased to meet again with National Assembly Speaker Gerry Brownlee after his official visit to New Zealand (March 2024); sent warm greetings to New Zealand Governor-General Cindy Kiro and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

The Prime Minister welcomed and appreciated the visit of the Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament to Vietnam in the year the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.

The Prime Minister also highly appreciated the good, substantive and comprehensive development of bilateral cooperation since the two countries upgraded their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's official visit to Vietnam in February 2025.

Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament Gerry Brownlee thanked Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for taking the time to meet him and for his strong support for the Vietnam-New Zealand relationship. He expressed his good impression and joy at having the opportunity to visit and witness the joyful atmosphere celebrating the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day; and congratulated Vietnam on its achievements in recent times.

Appreciating the role and position of Vietnam, the Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament affirmed that Vietnam is an important partner, the New Zealand Government and Parliament prioritize strengthening relations with Vietnam in New Zealand's overall foreign policy in the region; said that the New Zealand Parliament is strongly committed to supporting the promotion of cooperation with Vietnam in all fields.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked New Zealand for actively supporting Vietnam in its development process; emphasized that upgrading the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is the result of the efforts of both sides over more than 50 years of developing diplomatic relations, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations; suggested that both sides actively coordinate to concretize the high-level agreements that have been reached, continuing to deepen cooperation commensurate with the framework of the relationship at a new height.

National Assembly Chairman Gerry Brownlee agreed with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's proposal on "5 more points" to further deepen Vietnam - New Zealand cooperation in all fields, including deepening political and foreign relations, increasing delegation exchanges and high-level contacts, maintaining bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and effectively implementing signed documents;

Early develop a strategy to connect the two economies, promote the signing of economic, trade and investment cooperation agreements, facilitate market opening for each other's agricultural products, aim to diversify the supply chain, and strive to achieve the bilateral trade turnover target of 3 billion USD by 2026;

Deploy new areas of potential for the two countries such as green economy, digital economy, cooperation in digital transformation, science, technology and innovation, and response to climate change; continue to promote substantive defense and security cooperation and in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation in education and training, exchange of students, scientists and researchers; consider opening a direct flight connecting the two countries soon to promote people-to-people exchange and economic and trade cooperation as well as cooperation between localities, creating favorable conditions for businesses of the two countries to seek business and investment opportunities.

Speaker of the National Assembly Gerry Brownlee acknowledged Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s comments on measures to promote bilateral relations; stressed that Vietnam and New Zealand share common interests in ensuring the multilateral international trade system and uninterrupted supply chains, ensuring stable growth and prosperity in each country as well as globally; and affirmed that New Zealand highly values ​​the contributions of the Vietnamese community in New Zealand.

The two leaders noted that in the context of the complex and unpredictable developments in the regional and international situation, with many new security and strategic challenges arising, affecting the security and development environment of countries in the region in many ways, Vietnam and New Zealand need to strengthen consultation, information sharing, policy assessment and coordination, and close cooperation at regional and international forums, contributing positively to building a peaceful, stable, cooperative and prosperous Asia-Pacific region; and supporting New Zealand in deepening relations with ASEAN.
