This world sports arena is where the strongest competitors in all events gather, so in addition to effort, Vietnamese athletes will have to demonstrate their spirit and strong will to aim for the best possible results.
Will Duy Nhat overcome difficulties?
At the 2025 World Games, Vietnamese sports will compete in 7 sports with 25 athletes, including 10 athletes in beach handball, Wushu (6), Aerobics (3), Billiards (2), Petanque (2), Kickboxing (1) and Muay (1). At the 2022 World Games in the US, Vietnamese sports will have only 5 athletes participating in 3 sports: Muay, Billiards and Wushu, in which Muay fighter Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat and Wushu athlete Duong Thuy Vi won 2 gold medals, bringing Vietnam to 31st place overall.
Compared to the previous congress, the number of sports, athletes and competition content this year has made significant progress. Therefore, fans expect the Vietnamese sports teams to compete well and achieve higher results.
Three years ago, in his first World Games appearance, Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat had thrilling victories over opponents from Portugal, the Philippines, Ukraine and Kazakhstan to win the gold medal in the men's 57 kg category. This year, the boxer nicknamed "The Undefeated" continues to represent Vietnamese Muay Thai in this arena.
At 36 years old, Duy Nhat is one of the oldest athletes of Vietnamese sports at the Chengdu Games. Although he is past his prime and his opponents at the 2025 World Games are younger, the experience and bravery of having competed in the world's top tournaments is a huge advantage for the boxer born in 1989.
Duy Nhat's biggest challenge before the competition was losing weight. At the 2022 World Games, Duy Nhat won the gold medal in the men's 57 kg category, but at that time his body weight was only about 60 kg, meaning he had only lost about 3 kg. But this year, Duy Nhat weighed 64 kg in his normal body condition and he had to lose quite a bit of weight, about 7 kg - equivalent to more than 10% of his body weight - to compete in Chengdu.
This is a challenge for Duy Nhat, especially in the days leading up to the competition, he has to both eat and drink sparingly and exercise a lot to keep his body from exceeding 57 kg. This greatly affects his physical condition and strength, requiring Duy Nhat to really make an effort, have a strong will and show more than 100% of his performance in each match.
Despite the difficulties, Duy Nhat has the experience of a top-level fighter, and he himself is relatively well prepared for this World Games. Mr. Giap Trung Thang, Head of HCMC Muay Kickboxing and Coach in charge of "revealing" Duy Nhat's tactics in the upcoming matches: "In big, tense matches, Duy Nhat is required to emphasize the tactics of keeping distance and counterattacking quickly. Nhat's tactics are often built on the ability to move intelligently, effectively coordinating elbows and legs."
Thuy Vi and Quyet Chien are expected
Like Duy Nhat, female martial artist Duong Thuy Vi came to Chengdu with the determination to defend her gold medal. At the 2022 World Games, Thuy Vi successfully completed the Spear Technique and Sword Technique, leaving behind her two opponents from Canada and Korea to bring home the gold medal for Vietnamese Wushu after 19 years in this arena. At the age of 33, this is probably the last time Thuy Vi competes at the World Games, so the Hanoi girl will try her best to have the best performance.
“The World Games is a tournament with high professional requirements, anyone has the opportunity to achieve the highest results. I have had professional preparation in the past time and am very focused on the tournament. I hope I will be able to protect the results I had from the previous competition,” Thuy Vi expressed.
At present, Thuy Vi can be considered one of the most successful athletes in the history of Vietnamese Wushu. In addition to the 2022 World Games gold medal, this girl born in 1993 has won 6 SEA Games gold medals, 1 Asian Games gold medal in 2014 and 2 gold medals at the world championships in 2013 and 2017.
To achieve those proud, sparkling gold medals, Thuy Vi has gone through a process of persistent training and competition. Her passion and determination to pursue her career have helped the athlete nicknamed “The Jade Lady of Vietnamese Martial Arts” overcome difficulties to achieve success. Martial arts fans expect Thuy Vi to continue to strive to compete well and once again stand on the podium to receive medals at the Games in Chengdu.
Another face that also receives expectations is player Tran Quyet Chien, currently ranked 3rd in the world. Quyet Chien participated in the World Games 3 years ago in the US, but stopped in the quarterfinals. Since then, the player born in 1984 has made great strides in his career when he won 3 more World Cup championships, 1 silver medal at the World Championship, 1 world team championship (with Bao Phuong Vinh) and became the "leading bird" of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards in the international arena.
Before arriving in Chengdu to attend the 2025 World Games, Quyet Chien also won the championship title of Tour 2 HBSF, a playground considered as a "miniature World Cup" of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards. The 2025 World Games brings together many of the world's top players, but in competition, Quyet Chien always believes that his biggest opponent is himself.
Although 41 years old, experts assess that Quyet Chien is in the most "ripe" stage of his career and he promises to continue to explode to conquer more international titles for domestic Billiards.
