Education experts advise that you should study one major but be able to do many jobs. When choosing to study any profession, you need to equip yourself with core skills to be able to adapt to the 4.0 industrial revolution.

Many choices when choosing a major

According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son, there are currently about 250 universities, more than 300 colleges, and secondary schools. The number of majors at the university level is nearly 500, the number of occupations at the college and secondary levels is similar. Therefore, candidates have a variety of choices in terms of schools and majors.

However, as opportunities expand and advantages increase, the career choices of candidates become more difficult. Standing at the threshold of life, students wonder how to choose the most suitable aspirations for their strengths, suitable for the requirements of the labor market and have job opportunities in the future.

Besides, the explosion of information on mass media and social networks sometimes makes candidates and parents confused, even misunderstand, or misunderstand certain industries and professions.

“Each year, the number of candidates admitted to university is approximately 600,000, but the official enrollment rate is only about 80%, so 20% of candidates were admitted but did not enroll. This shows that when students register their wishes, when they choose a school and major, there are differences. In addition, after the first year, about 5-7% of students have to re-register. Thus, the number of students who made the wrong choice or made an inappropriate choice when registering their wishes is very large,” Mr. Son emphasized.

Choosing an inappropriate major also affects the need for employment after graduation. The 2023 student employment report (2022 graduates) from the University of Electricity shows that the number of students with jobs in the right field of study and related to the field of study is 50%.

Student employment areas are mainly distributed in 3 sectors: state, private, self-employment and foreign-invested: The number of students employed in the private sector is the highest (69%), followed by the state sector (13%), and the foreign-invested sector (11%). In addition, a number of students are tending to create their own jobs, preferring freelance work, and being self-employed in production and business, accounting for 8%.

At the International School (VNU- Hanoi ), the Survey Report on the Employment Status of University Graduates shows that: In 2023, international school graduates will mainly work in the fields of Trade/Services (29%), Finance/Credit (24.3%), Information Technology (15.5%), the rest are divided equally in the fields of import and export, marketing, engineering, education and other fields.

According to the feedback results, the rate of graduates of this school having jobs in their major or related to their major is 87.7%, and 12.3% in other majors. “A noteworthy point when asked about unemployed graduates, the balance between choosing a career in their major and one unrelated to their major is relatively high. This reflects the work trend of modern society, when students can choose any career; but it also partly shows the lack of clear direction in the development path of students after graduation” - quoted from the Report.

How to choose the right one?

Regarding this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh - Vice Principal of Phenikaa University shared: Job opportunities will first of all be based on the candidates' exam scores. If you do well on the exam, you will definitely have job opportunities. You should not register for any "hot" major because the important thing is whether you are suitable for that "hot" major or not.

For example, in the semiconductor industry, there are currently quite a few candidates interested, including female candidates. But in my opinion, you should not rush into the “hot” industry but answer these questions first:

Do I like that major? Do I have the ability to do that major? Does that major have development opportunities? Is the tuition fee suitable for my family? Is the benchmark for that major suitable for me? The most important thing is that you must determine your own ability before choosing a major, don't choose a "hot" major just because it is "hot".

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) also gave advice: Currently, universities have interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary training, combining many different elements from many fields, to create a broad foundation for students. Each student needs to create their own learning method, self-study to be able to learn for life.

“We do not study to get a university or college degree, but learning must be continuous. With the rapid development of science and technology, economic and social development in the world, we cannot stop studying.

Studying at university or college is just the first step, the most important foundation for students to have a long-term path, personal development, self-development, and career development. So we study one major but can do many jobs" - Ms. Thuy affirmed.

Ms. Thuy said that she studied at the Foreign Trade University and now works as a state manager in higher education. That is the accumulation of a lot of knowledge during her studies at school, during her work, and during the updates of changes and fluctuations in the world.

Ms. Thuy added: Right from high school, there are many subjects, courses, and modules related to career orientation for students to discover themselves, where their strengths are, what passion they want to devote themselves to, and where to continue to deepen their studies...

When you go to university, you will continue to be honed by your teachers to go further. If in university, you learn more about technology and soft skills, you can apply them in the field you are pursuing, delve deeper into specialized research. When you step out into the world, you will also have many career options.
