Heatstroke prevention with high school graduation exam candidates

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt19/06/2024

However, the prolonged hot weather has significantly affected exam preparation.

Many ways to fight heat

In recent days, in Thanh Hoa province, the weather has been extremely hot and dry, with some places recording outdoor temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius.

Ms. Ha Thi Thu - Principal of Ba Thuoc Secondary and High School (Thanh Hoa) said that the school is a 2-level school located in a difficult area of the district, including 6 communes: Ban Cong, Thanh Lam, Thanh Son, Lung Niem, Co Lung and Lung Cao. Therefore, many students have to travel quite long distances in hot weather to review for exams, which affects their health.

“Due to the lack of staff, teachers have to arrange suitable time for students to review for exams in the afternoons during the week. The hot weather makes the review work even more difficult for both teachers and students. Therefore, the school board often encourages teachers and students to work together to overcome the scorching days,” said Ms. Thu.

Similarly, Nguyen Hien High School (Hai Chau District, Da Nang City) dedicated the Council room to arrange 2 review sessions for students. Principal Tran Thi Minh Hue shared: “This is the only room with air conditioning, so the school prioritizes arranging it for review classes with a large number of students. Currently, grades 10 and 11 are on summer vacation, so when arranging classrooms, the school board should pay attention to avoid classrooms exposed to sunlight. Therefore, students need to pay attention to the class schedule to avoid the wrong room. The school has extended the review time at school until June 24, with classes concentrated in the morning to reduce the heat for students.”

Quan Son High School (Thanh Hoa) has organized review classes for students' ability groups since May 25. Every Friday afternoon, teachers organize advanced review classes for students who wish to apply for university admission. According to Principal Nguyen Minh Dao, the health of students and teachers is very important. Therefore, the school must flexibly adjust the schedule to help teachers and students avoid the heat and ensure their health for the upcoming exam.

Quan Son High School has adjusted the review schedule to suit the weather conditions. Specifically: In the morning, class start time is moved up early so that students can have a break from 10:00 to 10:30. In the afternoon, classes start later than the normal schedule. The school opens classrooms and encourages students who live far away to stay at school for lunch to ensure their health.

In Quang Tri , Huong Phung High School (Huong Hoa district) opens some classrooms from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so that students who live in boarding houses around the school area can review their studies in the evening.

Sharing information, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thinh - Principal of the school also said: "The school has a number of students who have to stay far from home. To save on living expenses, students share 3-5 people/room, so it is cramped and there is little space for studying. Therefore, the school opened a classroom for students to study in the evening under the supervision of teachers; helping them have a cool space, focusing better on studying for exams."

Disseminate exam regulations thoroughly

To achieve the goal of passing high school graduation and being admitted to the National Economics University, Tran Minh Quan - a student at Truong Dinh High School (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) is busy with his school schedule and exam preparation at centers to consolidate his knowledge.

“The High School Graduation Exam is just a few days away. Every day, I only have 4-5 hours to sleep, the rest of the time I focus on studying. The tight schedule, combined with the hot and humid weather, makes me always feel tired,” Minh Quan shared.

As an independent candidate taking the High School Graduation Exam this year, Nguyen Manh Duc, residing in Hai Ba Trung District (Hanoi), shared: Last year, I was a little short of the required points to be admitted to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, so this year I decided to retake the exam. The 2024 High School Graduation Exam is the final exam under the 2006 General Education Program. This is the reason Nguyen Manh Duc registered to take the exam this year with the highest determination to pass the university of his choice. Despite the hot weather and the difficult journey to extra classes, this is an opportunity for him to achieve his goal.

To help students confidently enter the exam, teachers of Cau Giay High School (Cau Giay District, Hanoi) accompanied them until the last days of review. Ms. Bui Thuy Linh - Vice Principal shared: Despite the hot weather, review classes continued to open to help students consolidate their knowledge, gain experience in taking the exam, and at the same time guide them to strictly follow the exam regulations.

Mr. Duong Hai Bay Muoi - Principal of Ly Thuong Kiet High School (Long Bien District, Hanoi) shared: With more than 600 12th grade students participating in the upcoming exam, in addition to continuing to support review, enhancing information, and answering questions related to the exam, teachers will accompany the students until the exam day.

Along with reminding students to remember the new regulations, especially the list of prohibited items to bring into the exam room, the school also recommends that if they bring prohibited items, they will be suspended from the exam, which means their exam results will be canceled, they will not be eligible for graduation, and they will lose the opportunity to be considered for university admission.

Prepare supplies for students

Minh Long High School (Minh Long District, Quang Ngai) has 28 independent candidates. Principal Le Ngoc Duc said: “The school has announced the review schedule for students who need to register to study. These are free review classes, so independent candidates have the same rights as students of the school. Students can choose the class to study. The homeroom teacher will put them in a class group to receive review materials, promptly update announcements related to the exam…”.

This year, Quan Son High School has 20 independent candidates registered for the exam. In order to provide maximum support, the school has announced the exam review schedule for the students. If you want to review at school, you can register and be placed in a class with grade 12 students.

Huong Phung High School plans to disseminate the exam regulations to all students before the final review day. Teacher Nguyen Huu Thinh said: “In addition to disseminating the exam regulations, teachers will review some tools that candidates are allowed to bring into the exam room such as Atlases, handheld calculators, etc. For Atlases with students’ handwriting during previous use, teachers will remind students to replace them with new Atlases.

The school has prepared a number of calculators borrowed from lower-class students by teachers. Those who are using invalid calculators will be lent from the reserve calculators to use during the Math exam. The school also counts the number of candidates with invalid Atlases to transfer to the Youth Union to reserve a number of new Atlases to equip candidates at the beginning of the Social Science exam.

Previously, at the beginning of the school year, Huong Phung High School surveyed the learning conditions of grade 12 students. For those who do not have a calculator, they will be able to borrow it from the library for use throughout the school year. In early May, when entering the peak review period, the school will collect the calculator to check and repair, replace the battery, and then lend it back to students. "If students are proficient in using a calculator, they can solve about 7 questions on the exam. This is also a way to prevent failure and increase the school's graduation rate," Mr. Thinh informed.

Nghia Hanh High School No. 1 (Nghia Hanh District, Quang Ngai) plans to organize a second mock exam for candidates from June 19 to 21. Although it is a mock exam, the school will organize the process like the real exam, from the structure, test matrix to time, registration numbering... This will help candidates get used to the atmosphere and pressure of the exam room, and review the knowledge they have learned during the past review period.

The 2024 high school graduation exam is the final exam according to the 2006 General Education Program, and is an exam with a "2 in 1" meaning. The exam results are used to consider graduation recognition and are also used by many higher education institutions for admission. Based on this reality, the Examination Steering Committees at all levels and schools are particularly interested in disseminating exam regulations and implementing plans to prevent cheating to ensure a safe and substantial exam.
