Starlink's first ground station in Vietnam is located

FPT Corporation representative revealed the progress of Starlink's trial construction in Vietnam. In which, the first ground centers have been finalized.

On August 20,FPT Telecom opened the company's second data center in Ho Chi Minh City. At the opening event, Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, CEO of FPT Corporation, shared many things about the development process of the new facility, along with the outstanding activities of the enterprise in recent times.

Mr. Khoa also revealed the progress of the pilot deployment of billionaire Elon Musk's low-altitude satellite Internet service Starlink in Vietnam. "3 weeks ago, Starlink was licensed for trial operation. The first two ground centers of the service are located at FPT datacenter in Tan Thuan (old District 7) and Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Park," Mr. Khoa revealed.

According to Notice No. 365/TB-VPCP dated July 16, after the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 659/QD-TTg allowing a controlled pilot deployment of telecommunications services using low-orbit satellite technology for SpaceX, the group is working with the Ministry of Finance to carry out procedures to establish a 100% foreign-owned enterprise in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) will carry out licensing procedures for the implementation of low-orbit satellite telecommunications services in Vietnam after SpaceX completes the procedures for establishing the above-mentioned enterprise and this enterprise submits a license application in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Telecommunications and Decree No. 163/2024/ND-CP and Decision No. 659/QD-TTg.

Also according to the Ministry of Science and Technology, when implementing the pilot, SpaceX committed to investing about 1.4 billion USD to order Vietnamese enterprises to produce Starlink terminals in Vietnam, contributing to creating more jobs.

Earlier in May, Reuters reported that Starlink could be built and operational as early as May or June in Da Nang city, and could be part of a network of up to 15 stations nationwide.

Starlink operates in more than 100 countries and territories, but it does not disclose the number of ground stations. Not every country has ground stations, which communicate with the satellites and relay data to users.

Starlink Installation Pros, a company that installs Starlink services, says on its website that Starlink has about 150 ground stations globally, nearly half of which are in the United States. However, that number has not been confirmed by SpaceX. The company is also not affiliated with SpaceX.

FPT's Fornix HCM2 data center is built with 8 floors, a total area of up to 10,000m² and a capacity of up to 3,600 racks. According to the company, this is the largest data center in Vietnam at present.
